McDonald’s Targets Over-40 Workers in Alajuela Hiring Push

Alajuela, Costa Rica — McDonald’s, operated in Latin America and the Caribbean by franchisee Arcos Dorados, is making a concerted effort to recruit workers over 40 in Alajuela, Costa Rica. The company will be holding job fairs at two locations on Wednesday, June 25th: the Alajuela Municipality and the McDonald’s Alajuela Oeste restaurant. Both events will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

This initiative aims to provide employment opportunities to a demographic often overlooked in the fast-paced world of quick-service restaurants. McDonald’s is emphasizing that experience isn’t a primary requirement; rather, they’re seeking individuals with a positive attitude and a desire to learn and grow.

For expert legal insight into the complexities surrounding McDonald’s employment practices, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from Bufete de Costa Rica.

McDonald’s employment model, while offering opportunities particularly for young people entering the workforce, often involves complex legal considerations surrounding issues like minimum wage compliance, part-time versus full-time classifications, and the specific rights of franchise employees versus corporate employees. Understanding these intricacies is key for both employers and employees to ensure a fair and legally compliant working environment.

The available positions include regular, permanent roles within the company, providing a chance for long-term career development. This focus on older workers is part of McDonald’s larger strategy to contribute to the economic growth of local communities and foster an inclusive and supportive work environment.

At McDonald’s, we offer job opportunities to people who don’t necessarily have prior experience. What we value most is their attitude, as well as their desire for self-improvement. We do this as part of our goal to boost the economic development of the communities where we operate and our commitment to providing an inclusive and learning environment for everyone.

In addition to permanent roles, McDonald’s is also hiring temporary staff for their peak season, running from July 1st to July 27th. This provides an opportunity for those seeking short-term employment to gain experience and earn income.

The minimum requirements for applicants include having completed ninth grade, being over 18 years old, and being available to work rotating shifts. A passion for customer service and a commitment to cleanliness are also highly valued.

McDonald’s offers a range of benefits for its employees, including flexible schedules to accommodate studies, ongoing training and skill development, academic agreements, and discount programs. They also provide on-site medical services, wellness programs, a free psychological support hotline, a credit union, free meals, and uniforms.

Interested individuals can also apply online through the McDonald’s hiring portal. This online application process allows applicants to apply at their convenience and provides another avenue for joining the McDonald’s team. Arcos Dorados, with over 75 restaurants across the country, plans to hold similar recruitment events in various cantons throughout 2025.
