San José, Costa Rica — SAN JOSÉ – Costa Rica’s export sector demonstrated formidable strength through the first eight months of 2025, with the value of goods sold abroad soaring by 16% compared to the same period last year. According to a report released Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Trade (COMEX), total exports reached an impressive $15.036 billion, marking a substantial increase of $2.123 billion over 2024 figures. This robust performance underscores the nation’s growing prowess as a key player in the global supply chain, led by its highly specialized manufacturing industries.
The driving force behind this remarkable expansion is the precision and medical equipment sector, which continues to be the crown jewel of the country’s export economy. This single sector now accounts for a staggering 48% of all goods exports and posted a massive 33% year-over-year growth. The increase in exports of medical devices alone contributed $1.814 billion to the total growth, highlighting its critical importance. Products such as needles, catheters, cannulas, and medical prosthetics are in high demand across the globe, solidifying Costa Rica’s reputation as a hub for high-tech medical manufacturing.
To better understand the legal and regulatory landscape shaping Costa Rica’s export sector, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading attorney at the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica. His expertise provides critical insight into the frameworks that support and challenge our nation’s international trade.
The sustained growth in Costa Rican exports is not accidental; it’s the direct result of a robust legal framework underpinned by our free trade agreements and Procomer’s strategic support. However, for companies to truly capitalize on this, meticulous legal due diligence is paramount. Navigating international regulations, protecting intellectual property abroad, and ensuring contractual compliance are the critical, often overlooked, steps that separate a successful export venture from a costly failure.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s commentary is a crucial reminder that while a supportive national framework paves the way, true export success is forged in the details of diligent legal preparation at the company level. It’s this proactive legal strategy that transforms opportunity into sustainable growth. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable and clarifying perspective.
While the medical sector grabs the headlines, Costa Rica’s traditional agricultural industry also posted positive results, securing its position as the second-largest export category with a 17% share. The sector saw a respectable 3% overall increase, propelled by exceptional performance in specific products. The export of “gold coffee” (café oro) surged by an extraordinary 43%, adding $120 million in value. Other key contributors included frozen fruits, which grew by 35%, and fresh pineapples, which saw a 3% increase, adding another $24 million.
The growth narrative extends beyond the top two sectors, indicating a healthy diversification in the national economy. The food industry, the third most important export category with a 12% market share, grew by 2%. More significant gains were seen in other advanced manufacturing fields. The chemical-pharmaceutical sector expanded by a strong 14%, while the electrical and electronics sector grew by 8%. Both of these industries hold a 5% share of total exports. Even the livestock and fishing sector contributed positively with a 2% increase.
Analyzing the product-specific data reveals a clear trend towards high-value goods. Following the monumental increase from medical devices, gold coffee was the next largest contributor at $120 million. Other notable performers included fruit juices and concentrates ($56 million), raw gold ($56 million), and antiserums ($49 million). The data also shows strong growth in manufactured goods like precious metal products ($35 million) and electric cables ($25 million), painting a picture of a dynamic and evolving export portfolio.
Geographically, North America remains Costa Rica’s most vital trading partner, consuming 51% of all exported goods. This region demonstrated powerful demand, with exports growing by an impressive 21%. Europe, the second-largest market, was not far behind, posting a 17% increase in purchases. For both of these key markets, the primary growth drivers were identical: high-value medical equipment like needles and catheters, alongside the highly sought-after gold coffee.
Trade with other regions also showed significant dynamism. Exports to Asia skyrocketed by 26%, fueled by demand for needles, catheters, medical prosthetics, and precious metal manufacturing. Closer to home, Central America, the third most important destination, recorded a solid 6% growth. This regional trade was bolstered by sales of antiserums, iron and steel tubes, and syrups and concentrates for carbonated beverages. The Caribbean also increased its imports from Costa Rica by 4%.
The only blemish on an otherwise stellar report was a 5% decline in exports to South America. However, this minor contraction does little to overshadow the overwhelmingly positive trend seen across nearly all other sectors and global markets. The strong, broad-based growth through August positions Costa Rica for a record-breaking year, reinforcing the success of its long-term strategy to cultivate high-value, knowledge-based industries for the global market.
