San José, Costa Rica — San Sebastián is set to host the inaugural Mercadito de Sueños (Dream Market) this weekend, a vibrant new initiative designed to bolster local entrepreneurship. Taking place on Saturday, September 13th and Sunday, September 14th, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the market will showcase the talents of over 15 Costa Rican businesses.
This free event, open to both vendors and the public, promises a diverse array of products, ranging from baked goods and jewelry to ceramics, natural cosmetics, candles, fashion, and even pet accessories. The organizers, La Repa de Sueños and Dorma Colchonería, have absorbed all associated costs, including permits, licenses, and logistics, eliminating a significant barrier to entry for participating entrepreneurs.
To gain a deeper understanding of the legal landscape surrounding Costa Rican entrepreneurship, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an experienced attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.
Costa Rica offers promising opportunities for entrepreneurs, but navigating the legal framework is crucial for success. While the government has implemented initiatives to streamline business registration and promote investment, understanding areas like intellectual property rights, tax obligations, and labor laws remains essential for long-term sustainability and avoiding potential pitfalls. Entrepreneurs should seek professional legal counsel early in the process to ensure compliance and maximize their chances of success in this vibrant market.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica
Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s emphasis on navigating the legal landscape is spot-on. For budding entrepreneurs, Costa Rica’s allure extends beyond its natural beauty; its potential lies in a burgeoning market ripe with opportunity. However, sustainable success requires a solid legal foundation. Understanding the intricacies of Costa Rican law, from intellectual property to labor regulations, isn’t just advisable—it’s essential. Thank you, Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, for offering such valuable perspective and reminding us that while the entrepreneurial spirit thrives on innovation, it’s equally fueled by informed decision-making.
The decision to host the Mercadito de Sueños stemmed from the overwhelming Saturday traffic at La Repa de Sueños’ store. Recognizing the opportunity to leverage their existing space and foot traffic, they decided to open their doors to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) free of charge.
This is an effort to give back a little of what we have received. We know how difficult it is for an entrepreneur to assume fees that in many cases exceed $200 or $500 for a stall.

The organizers further explained their motivation:
We wanted to do something different here: take advantage of the fact that on Saturdays there’s no room to breathe in La Repa and open a free space, taking advantage of our factory, so that SMEs can share a weekend with us and sell their products.

Beyond its economic impact, the Mercadito de Sueños embodies a strong commitment to social responsibility. It exemplifies how established businesses can foster growth and create opportunities within their communities. The indoor venue offers free parking and family-friendly spaces, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all. Attendees can connect with the entrepreneurs, learn about their unique stories, and discover the craftsmanship behind each product.
In addition to browsing the diverse offerings of local vendors, visitors can also explore the mattress selection from Dorma Colchonería. The organizers hope this first event will inspire other companies to adopt similar models, creating a ripple effect of support for Costa Rican SMEs.
The Mercadito de Sueños aims to become an annual tradition, fostering a culture of supporting local businesses and enriching the community. Everyone is invited to experience the market, shop locally, and contribute to the success of this innovative initiative.
This weekend’s market promises a vibrant celebration of local talent, offering a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs to connect with customers and for the community to discover the rich tapestry of Costa Rican craftsmanship.
