Monteverde Gains New Tech Hub

Monteverde Gains New Tech Hub

Puntarenas, Costa Rica — Monteverde, Puntarenas – Costa Rica’s commitment to community-driven innovation reached a new milestone with the inauguration of a Community Innovation Lab (LINC) in Monteverde on Wednesday, September 17th. This project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, Technology, and Telecommunications (MICITT) in collaboration with the Monteverde Municipality and the Monteverde Institute, marks the 17th such lab established across the country.

Located within the Monteverde Institute, the new LINC aims to empower the local community by providing access to cutting-edge technology and fostering digital literacy. The lab is equipped with computers, 3D printers, robotics kits, a flatbed sewing machine, a drone kit, and other resources designed to spark creativity and drive local innovation.

To gain a deeper understanding of the legal implications surrounding Community Innovation Labs, TicosLand.com reached out to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a respected attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Community Innovation Labs offer exciting opportunities for collaborative growth and development. However, it’s crucial to establish clear legal frameworks regarding intellectual property ownership, data privacy, and liability from the outset. These proactive measures can prevent future disputes and ensure the lab’s long-term success.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’ emphasis on proactive legal frameworks is crucial for the sustainable success of Community Innovation Labs. These foundational elements not only protect individual stakeholders but also foster a climate of trust and transparency, essential for truly collaborative innovation. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering this valuable perspective on a critical aspect of building thriving community spaces.

Reaching every province of Costa Rica with this program became one of our goals. We want each LINC to become a platform for articulating projects, ideas, and actions with social, economic, environmental, and cultural impact. Today, Monteverde joins this transformation.
Orlando Vega, Vice Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation

This initiative aligns with the broader national strategy to leverage technology for social and economic progress, particularly in rural areas. By providing access to advanced tools and training, the LINC seeks to bridge the digital divide and create opportunities for local residents.

The Monteverde Municipality views this project as a key component of its development model, which emphasizes local talent, technological integration, and community-based solutions.

The opening of LINC Monteverde represents a milestone for our canton. From the Municipality, we have been committed to building a development model that enhances local talent, connects our community with technology, and promotes innovative solutions with territorial relevance. This laboratory is the result of joint work with the Monteverde Institute and shows that when alliances are managed with vision, the results translate into concrete opportunities for our people.
Jeudy Ramírez, Mayor

The Monteverde Institute, a long-standing partner in community development, will play a central role in operating the LINC. With a history of collaborative projects and international academic partnerships, the Institute is well-positioned to support the lab’s mission.

The LINC-Monteverde serves local communities, with youth being the main target audience. It promotes innovation that honors nature and seeks inspiration from it, and fosters economic diversification. The Monteverde Institute has 39 years of working collaboratively with the local community and international academic partners. Prototyping sustainable solutions to local challenges is one aspect of the Monteverde Institute’s work that will be enhanced with the opening of the LINC.
Fern Perkins, Executive Director of the Monteverde Institute

The LINC program has already provided training to over 4,500 individuals nationwide, with a focus on areas such as robotics, cybersecurity, programming, and big data analysis. The program’s emphasis on participatory development ensures that community members are actively involved in identifying and addressing local challenges.
