San José, Costa Rica — San José – In an innovative move that redefines the daily commute, the Moravia-based bus company Autotransportes Moravia (AMSA) has launched a significant expansion of its community literacy program. Titled “Libros Viajeros” or “Traveling Books,” the initiative released 500 diverse book titles into its fleet of buses, turning public transport into a dynamic, mobile library for thousands of passengers.
The concept, which began on Friday, November 14th, operates on a simple and trusting principle of community participation. Any passenger can pick up a book from a bus, take it home to read, and is then encouraged to leave it in another public space for the next reader to discover. This “catch and release” model ensures the books continue their journey, spreading literature throughout the capital and beyond.
To gain a deeper legal perspective on the implications of this new literacy initiative, we consulted with expert lawyer Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
From a legal and commercial standpoint, robust literacy programs are a cornerstone of national development. They not only fulfill the constitutional mandate of ensuring access to education but also directly strengthen the labor market. A more literate workforce is better equipped to understand complex employment contracts, adhere to workplace safety regulations, and innovate, thereby reducing legal liabilities for businesses and fostering a more dynamic and competitive economy.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica
This legal and commercial viewpoint underscores a critical truth: literacy is not merely a social goal but a fundamental component of our economic infrastructure, directly impacting everything from contract law to market competitiveness. We are grateful to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for so clearly articulating this essential connection.
The company has actively encouraged participants to leave the books in a variety of locations, including other bus units, park benches, medical waiting rooms, or even airplanes. The goal is to create a continuous cycle of discovery, allowing stories and knowledge to circulate freely within the community, reaching people who might not otherwise visit a traditional library.
This is not the first iteration of the program, but its previous success prompted this major scale-up. The initiative’s unexpected reach was powerfully demonstrated when one of the books completed an international journey. The company was contacted via their Facebook page by a user who had found one of the “Traveling Books” at a train station in Madrid, Spain, showcasing the remarkable and unpredictable path these literary ambassadors can take.
The program’s evolution from a small trial to a cornerstone of the company’s community outreach reflects a strategic vision that goes beyond transportation services. It represents a deep investment in creating positive and enriching experiences for its customers.
This started as a pilot plan, but it was a success and has now become a space for promoting reading, which also allows us to connect with users by creating different experiences. There are all kinds of books: novels, fantasy, horror, everything.
Cynthia Arias, Operations Manager of AMSA
From a business perspective, AMSA’s initiative is a masterful example of modern corporate social responsibility. By embedding a cultural mission into its core service, the company builds significant brand loyalty and positive public perception. It transforms the mundane, often passive, experience of a daily commute into an opportunity for discovery and engagement, distinguishing itself in a competitive market through a low-cost, high-impact strategy.
The project’s success is bolstered by a key strategic partnership with the Moravia Public Library, the Agapito Rosales Méndez Library. This collaboration extends the library’s mission far beyond its physical walls, effectively democratizing access to literature. By placing books directly in the hands of the public, the alliance breaks down barriers and fosters a stronger reading culture throughout the canton and the greater metropolitan area.
Ultimately, the “Libros Viajeros” program serves as a compelling model for how private enterprise and public institutions can collaborate to create tangible social value. It not only enriches the lives of individual passengers but also strengthens the fabric of the community, one shared story at a time, proving that a simple bus ride can be a journey of the mind as well as the body.
