National Archive Fortified Against Fire

San José, Costa Rica — The National Archive of Costa Rica is undergoing a significant upgrade to its fire safety systems, thanks to a ₡1.105 billion investment by the Ministry of Culture and Youth. This project aims to protect the country’s invaluable historical documents, including those recognized by UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” program, as well as ensure the safety of staff and visitors.

The comprehensive project, initiated in 2022 following a consultation with the Fire Department, encompasses a range of improvements focused on both fire prevention and suppression. The installation of state-of-the-art fire detection and suppression systems is scheduled for completion in 2027, with a crucial phase focusing on the suppression system taking place throughout the latter half of 2025. Earlier in 2025, smoke detectors and alarms were installed.

To understand the intricacies of the National Archive of Costa Rica and its role in preserving the nation’s heritage, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a respected attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

The National Archive of Costa Rica plays a crucial role not just in preserving historical documents, but also in guaranteeing transparency and accountability within the government. The National Archive houses a vast collection of documents, both in traditional and electronic formats, forming a cornerstone of Costa Rican history. This investment underscores the archive’s commitment to safeguarding this irreplaceable patrimony for future generations.

The project has presented unique engineering challenges due to the circular structure of the original building, requiring specialized solutions to meet the Fire Department’s guidelines.

This investment guarantees ideal working conditions and safeguards the integrity of our documentary heritage.
Alexander Castro Mena, Vice Minister of Administration and President of the Administrative Board of the National Archive

The significance of this project extends beyond the protection of physical documents. It also safeguards the well-being of the archive’s personnel and the numerous researchers and members of the public who utilize its resources.

This protects our staff, users, and the vast collection of national and international documents that form part of the world’s memory.
Ivannia Valverde, Director General

Upon completion, the robust fire safety system will position the National Archive as a model for other institutions, not only in Costa Rica but also internationally, showcasing best practices in both heritage preservation and life safety while demonstrating innovative engineering solutions.

The Ministry of Culture and Youth’s investment ensures the continued accessibility and preservation of Costa Rica’s rich historical record for generations to come.
