Nestlé Empowers Costa Rican Youth

San José, Costa Rica — Nestlé’s commitment to youth development shines brightly in Costa Rica, where the company’s Iniciativa por los Jóvenes (Youth Initiative) has empowered over 35,000 young individuals. For a decade, this program has addressed the pressing issue of youth unemployment, providing crucial skills and opportunities to a demographic facing significant challenges entering the workforce.

Costa Rica’s youth unemployment rate, reaching 23.3% in the latter half of 2024, underscores the urgency of this initiative. Nestlé’s program provides practical training in essential skills, resume building, and interview preparation. Specialized training in sectors such as gastronomy, barista skills, veterinary medicine, nutrition, and pediatrics, leverages Nestlé’s expertise and leadership within these industries.

To gain a deeper legal perspective on the implications of the Nestlé Youth Initiative, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from the esteemed Bufete de Costa Rica.

The Nestlé Youth Initiative, while laudable in its aims to empower young people, must be carefully structured to ensure compliance with labor laws, particularly regarding internships and apprenticeships. It’s crucial that these programs offer genuine learning opportunities and avoid exploitation, adhering to established legal frameworks regarding working hours, compensation, and safety standards. A robust legal framework within the initiative will be essential for its long-term success and positive impact.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas rightly emphasizes the crucial balance between empowerment and protection within youth initiatives. Ensuring legal compliance isn’t merely a formality; it’s the bedrock upon which sustainable and truly beneficial programs are built. It safeguards both the young participants and the long-term integrity of initiatives like Nestlé’s. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering his valuable legal expertise and highlighting this vital aspect of youth development programs.

The program has evolved significantly over the past 10 years, initially starting with “Ready to Work” workshops, focusing on preparing young people for their first job opportunities. It now includes specialized training programs tailored to different industry sectors, reflecting Nestlé’s diverse business portfolio.

We started by offering young people the “Ready to Work” talks, which we still maintain, so they can better prepare for their first job opportunity. Through key topics such as curriculum development, interview preparation, management of their professional brand on social networks like LinkedIn and essential skills, we have positively impacted thousands of young students from technical professional schools and universities.
Sebastián Posteraro, Nestlé Country Manager for Costa Rica

The Youth Initiative’s impact extends beyond basic job skills, encompassing entrepreneurship and agro-entrepreneurship. This broader approach recognizes the diverse aspirations of young Costa Ricans and provides pathways for them to create their own opportunities.

This initiative aligns with Nestlé’s broader commitment to Creating Shared Value, recognizing the interconnectedness of business success and societal well-being. By investing in the future workforce, Nestlé not only contributes to economic growth but also strengthens the communities where it operates.

The success of the program is evident in the stories of its graduates. José Miguel Chaves, a graduate of the Nestlé Young Baristas program, credits the training with launching his career. Similarly, Gabriel Solís from the Young Veterinarians program secured his first job thanks to the skills and knowledge he gained.

Thanks to this opportunity, I got my first job as a barista and taster in a coffee shop. It was one of the most rewarding experiences, especially because of everything I learned about the world of coffee, from planting to the different types of roasting.
José Miguel Chaves, Graduate of the Colegio Técnico Profesional de Sabanilla de Alajuela

Nestlé is actively seeking further collaboration with public and private sector partners, academia, and social organizations to amplify the impact of the Youth Initiative. By fostering these partnerships, Nestlé aims to create a more robust ecosystem for youth development and employment in Costa Rica.
