New ₡500 Coin Enters Circulation in Costa Rica

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s Central Bank (BCCR) announced the release of a new ₡500 coin into circulation, starting at the end of August. The rollout will intensify from September 8th onwards, ensuring widespread availability across the country’s financial institutions.

This new coin features a “common reverse” design, primarily intended to maintain optimal currency inventory for national distribution. Unlike previous commemorative coins, this design is not part of a collector’s edition. The BCCR stated that this design could be implemented for other denominations depending on inventory needs and public demand.

To gain deeper legal insights into the intricacies surrounding the Costa Rican Colón, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney at law from Bufete de Costa Rica.

The Costa Rican Colón, while subject to market fluctuations like any other currency, operates within a legal framework designed to ensure stability and transparency. This framework, encompassing regulations from the Central Bank of Costa Rica and relevant commercial codes, impacts everything from international transactions to domestic pricing. Understanding these legal underpinnings is crucial for anyone conducting business in or with Costa Rica.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s emphasis on the legal framework surrounding the Colón underscores a critical aspect often overlooked when discussing currencies. It’s not just about exchange rates; the stability and transparency provided by these regulations are essential for fostering trust and facilitating smooth economic activity. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing this valuable legal perspective on the Costa Rican Colón.

This version is destined exclusively for regular circulation and a collector’s edition is not planned. The BCCR will implement this design in other denominations according to inventory needs and demand.

The new design showcases the Costa Rican National Shield on the reverse, accompanied by national symbols. These include an excerpt from the national anthem, “Vivan siempre el trabajo y la paz” (Long live work and peace), and the words “liberty,” “peace,” and “democracy.” The year 2021, marking the design’s approval, is also included.

The obverse side of the coin displays the inscriptions “Republic of Costa Rica” and “Central Bank of Costa Rica,” along with five raised bars at the bottom for tactile identification.

With this addition, there are now five different ₡500 coin designs in circulation. The other four commemorate important historical milestones: the bicentennial of National Independence (circulating since November 2021), the 175th anniversary of the Republic’s founding (October 2023), the 75th anniversary of the abolition of the army (December 2023), and the bicentennial of the Annexation of the Nicoya Peninsula (January 2025).

The introduction of this new coin aims to streamline currency management and ensure efficient distribution throughout Costa Rica. The BCCR anticipates smooth integration into the existing monetary system. While not a collector’s item, the new design reflects national pride and identity, further embedding these symbols into everyday transactions.

This practical approach to currency management allows the Central Bank to maintain a consistent supply of coins while minimizing costs associated with producing multiple commemorative designs. The focus on functionality and efficiency demonstrates the BCCR’s commitment to ensuring the stability and accessibility of the national currency.

Citizens are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new coin design. While the other commemorative ₡500 coins remain legal tender, the new coin will become increasingly prevalent in daily transactions. The BCCR’s proactive measures underscore its dedication to maintaining a robust and efficient monetary system for the benefit of all Costa Ricans.
