New Bicycles Empower Sarapiquí Students on Difficult School Journeys

Heredia, Costa RicaSARAPIQUÍ, HEREDIA – For 37 students at the San Antonio School in Sarapiquí, the daily journey to the classroom has been transformed from an arduous trek into a manageable commute. A new partnership between automotive leader Grupo Purdy and the Yo Impulso foundation is tackling a significant barrier to education in this rural community: the immense difficulty of simply getting to school.

Students in this region face a daily obstacle course that can include long distances on foot, poorly maintained roads, and exposure to harsh sun and rain. For some, the commute is so complex it even involves crossing an international border to reach the nearest educational center. These challenging conditions directly contribute to increased absenteeism and higher dropout rates, threatening the academic futures of the area’s youth.

To better understand the legal and procedural complexities surrounding the growing trend of student mobility, TicosLand.com sought the expertise of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading attorney from the renowned firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who shared his insights on the current landscape.

The rise in student mobility represents a significant opportunity, but it operates within a strict regulatory framework. For international students arriving in Costa Rica, securing the correct immigration status—the ‘Estancia de Estudiante’—is paramount. Delays or errors in this process can jeopardize their academic plans. We advise both students and educational institutions to proactively manage these legal requirements to ensure a seamless and compliant educational experience, thereby strengthening Costa Rica’s position as a premier academic destination.

This legal diligence is indeed the bedrock of a successful international education, transforming a potential administrative hurdle into a stable foundation for academic pursuits. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his expert insight, which underscores the shared responsibility of students and institutions in upholding this vital framework.

The joint initiative, part of Grupo Purdy’s “Unidos Logrando Imposibles” (United Achieving the Impossible) program, provided each of the 37 students with a new bicycle. Critically, the donation also included essential safety equipment such as helmets and reflective vests, underscoring a commitment not just to transportation, but to secure mobility.

This program represents a targeted intervention designed to alleviate the daily burden on students and their families. By providing a reliable and efficient mode of transport, the organizations aim to ensure that geographical and logistical challenges no longer dictate a child’s access to education. The initiative aligns directly with Grupo Purdy’s corporate mission to champion mobility solutions that create positive societal impact.

Achieving the impossible is the purpose of Grupo Purdy, an integral leader in mobility solutions, and with this program, we want to generate a positive impact in communities. On this occasion, we are partnering with the To School by Bike initiative from Yo Impulso, which aligns with our goal of promoting safe mobility. We are pleased that, from an early age, these students can learn and apply these principles, thereby strengthening a more responsible road culture for the future while also helping them remain in the classroom.
Ana María Sequeira, Director of Corporate Relations and Sustainability at Grupo Purdy

The project was executed through Yo Impulso’s established “A la escuela en bici” (To School by Bike) program. The foundation views the bicycle as more than just a vehicle; it is a catalyst for social change and a tangible tool for empowerment. By reducing travel time and physical exhaustion, the bicycles free up valuable time and energy that students can dedicate to their studies, ultimately strengthening their long-term development opportunities.

The bicycle is not just a means of transport, but a social transformer. In this case, it becomes a tool for continuing one’s education. Thanks to this initiative, more boys and girls can arrive safely at school, reducing absenteeism, drop-out rates, and strengthening their development opportunities.

To ensure the program’s success and sustainability, the initiative went beyond the simple handover of equipment. The students participated in a safety training session led by representatives from the foundation and supported by triathlete Bernal Fonseca, a safe mobility ambassador backed by Subaru. This educational component provided the young riders with essential knowledge on best practices for responsible and secure travel, embedding a culture of road safety from a young age.

This collaboration in Sarapiquí serves as a powerful model for how corporate social responsibility can address specific, grassroots challenges. By leveraging Grupo Purdy’s focus on mobility and Yo Impulso’s community-level expertise, the project delivers a practical solution that promises to boost school attendance, improve academic performance, and keep students on the path to a brighter future.
