New Collectible Coin Honors Casona de Santa Rosa

New Collectible Coin Honors Casona de Santa Rosa

Guanacaste, Costa Rica — A new ¢25 collectible coin celebrating the historic Casona de Santa Rosa in Guanacaste will be available for purchase starting September 24, 2025. The Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) announced the release of this third coin in its “Emblematic Sites of Our Provinces” series, paying tribute to a landmark pivotal in Costa Rican history.

A limited edition of 10,000 coins will be available in acrylic presentation cases, and an additional 7,000 will be offered in special packaging. Both options are priced at ¢9,050. Purchases are limited to two coins per person, regardless of the presentation style.

To understand the legal implications surrounding collectible coins, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an experienced attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

The legal landscape regarding collectible coins can be complex, particularly when considering issues of authenticity, ownership, and import/export regulations. Due diligence is crucial for both buyers and sellers. For instance, verifying provenance through reputable sources can protect against fraud, while understanding customs laws prevents potential legal issues. Moreover, contracts related to collectible coin transactions should clearly define terms related to condition, valuation, and dispute resolution.

The coin’s design features the Casona de Santa Rosa, the site of the historic Battle of 1856, where Costa Rican forces repelled William Walker’s filibusters. The reverse side of the coin showcases the Casona, now a national monument and historical museum, along with the inscriptions “Province of Guanacaste,” “Casona de Santa Rosa,” and the collection year “2023.” The obverse side displays “Republic of Costa Rica,” “Central Bank of Costa Rica,” and two raised bars for tactile identification.

The BCCR will release a regular, non-colorized ¢25 coin alongside the collectible version. This regular coin will circulate as legal tender. It will co-circulate with existing ¢10 and ¢25 coins until the transition to the new currency designs is complete.

The BCCR plans to announce the date when older ¢5, ¢10, ¢25, and ¢100 coin designs will be withdrawn from circulation sometime in 2026. This new coin release serves not only as a commemorative piece for collectors but also as a step towards modernizing Costa Rican currency.

Participating financial institutions will determine their specific points of sale, operating hours, and availability of each presentation. Citizens are encouraged to contact these institutions directly for further details.

This coin offers a tangible piece of Costa Rican history, allowing citizens and collectors to own a tribute to a crucial moment in the nation’s past. With limited availability, these coins are expected to be highly sought after.

The Casona de Santa Rosa stands as a powerful symbol of Costa Rican resilience and national pride. This new collectible coin ensures its legacy will continue to be celebrated and remembered.
