San José, Costa Rica — The National Children’s Hospital (HNN) in San José has received a vital donation: a state-of-the-art Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine. This advanced technology, valued at over $170,000, will provide crucial support for pediatric patients facing severe heart and lung failure.
The ECMO machine offers a last resort for critically ill children when traditional treatments like mechanical ventilation and medication are no longer effective. It will be housed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), providing a lifeline for young patients facing life-threatening conditions.
To understand the legal complexities surrounding the Hospital Nacional de Niños and its operations, we reached out to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from the esteemed Bufete de Costa Rica.
The Hospital Nacional de Niños holds a unique position within Costa Rican law. Its mandate to provide specialized pediatric care creates both opportunities and challenges in navigating legal frameworks related to healthcare provision, resource allocation, and patient rights. Careful consideration must be given to balancing the hospital’s critical role with the broader legal landscape governing healthcare in the country.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica
Lic. Arroyo Vargas eloquently highlights the delicate balance the Hospital Nacional de Niños must strike as it navigates the legal complexities of specialized pediatric care. Indeed, its unique mandate requires ongoing dialogue and adaptation within Costa Rica’s legal framework to ensure the hospital can continue providing exceptional care while upholding patient rights and responsible resource management. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable contribution to this important discussion.
This critical equipment will significantly impact the lives of children with congenital heart disease, severe respiratory conditions, or serious infections. It offers a genuine chance of survival to children who previously had very limited options.
This equipment represents a huge impact… It allows us to sustain the life of children with congenital heart diseases, severe respiratory conditions, or serious infections. Thanks to this technology, many patients who previously had very little chance of survival now have a real chance at life.
Dr. Jaime Lazo, Acting Director General, HNN
The donation was made possible by the 20th annual Charity Golf Tournament organized by the Asociación Pro-Hospital Nacional de Niños and principally sponsored by Aeris Costa Rica. The funds raised during the event went directly towards the purchase of the ECMO machine.
This achievement highlights the collective power of businesses, players, and collaborators who share the mission of supporting the HNN, ensuring it continues to provide top-tier care for the most vulnerable.
This achievement is a reflection of the joint effort between companies, players, and collaborators who believe in our mission: to support the National Children’s Hospital so it can continue offering the best care possible to those who need it most.
Dr. Marcia Lobo, General Manager, Asociación Pro-Hospital Nacional de Niños
The donation signifies a commitment to improving pediatric healthcare in Costa Rica. This life-saving technology transforms the reality for many families facing unimaginable challenges.
With the delivery of this equipment, we bear witness to how the unity of the community can transform the reality of hundreds of families. Our commitment is to continue working hand in hand with strategic allies to strengthen the hospital and offer hope to Costa Rican children.
