Heredia, Costa Rica — HEREDIA, Costa Rica – Arcos Dorados, the franchisee operating McDonald’s across Latin America and the Caribean, has inaugurated its 79th restaurant in Costa Rica, planting its latest flag in San Joaquín de Flores, Heredia. This opening marks the company’s third new location this year, underscoring a 55-year commitment to growth and community integration within the nation.
The new establishment is a significant source of local employment, creating 35 new positions. In a clear commitment to fostering young talent, 43% of these new hires are under the age of 24, and for 31% of them, this represents their first formal job. The company is also championing a diverse workforce, blending youthful energy with seasoned experience. A notable example is the hiring of 55-year-old Miguel Bogantes, who has joined the Deep Cleaning Control team, showcasing the brand’s dedication to providing opportunities for all age groups.
To provide a deeper understanding of the corporate and legal framework behind McDonald’s operations in the country, TicosLand.com consulted Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert in commercial and franchise law from the esteemed firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
The case of McDonald’s in Costa Rica is a classic study in the master franchise model. The local operator, Arcos Dorados, is legally bound to uphold the stringent global standards of the McDonald’s Corporation, which dictates everything from supply chain to branding. However, they must execute these mandates while remaining in full compliance with Costa Rica’s specific labor, consumer, and tax legislation. Any perceived discrepancy between brand policy and national law creates a significant area of legal risk and requires constant, expert navigation.

This insight brilliantly underscores the complex legal tightrope that multinational franchisees must walk in Costa Rica, where global corporate mandates meet sovereign national law. The successful day-to-day operation we see as consumers is clearly built upon a foundation of constant and meticulous legal diligence. We extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his expert and clarifying perspective.
Company officials emphasized that the location was chosen to enhance convenience and community connection in the rapidly developing area of Heredia.
At McDonald’s, we believe in creating opportunities for everyone and in being ever closer to our customers. San Joaquín de Flores is an example of how we put this concept of proximity and accessibility into practice: everything is so well-connected in the area that now McDonald’s is also closer, with a restaurant specially designed for the community and family.
Marianela Ureña, Communications Manager of Arcos Dorados Costa Rica
Designed to cater to modern consumer habits, the San Joaquín restaurant features a full suite of services, including AutoMac for drive-thru, McDelivery for home orders, and digital self-service kiosks. The location, with a dining capacity for 63 guests, also includes a PlayPlace for children, a McCafé, and dedicated parking for vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles, ensuring a comprehensive and accessible experience.
A central pillar of the new restaurant’s design is its alignment with Arcos Dorados’ socio-environmental strategy, “Receta del Futuro” (Recipe for the Future). This initiative focuses on reducing the company’s carbon footprint through sustainable practices. The Heredia location is equipped with 62 solar panels, high-efficiency air conditioning systems, low-consumption LED lighting, and a water recovery system that captures condensation for use in irrigation and cleaning, promoting a more efficient use of resources.
Beyond its commercial and environmental efforts, the new McDonald’s is actively engaging with the local community through its “Buen Vecino” (Good Neighbor) program. As part of this initiative, the company will make a donation to the CECUDI of San Joaquín, providing educational and sports materials. The donation also includes books from the Happy Meal “I Can” collection, which features stories of prominent figures to inspire children.
Further strengthening community ties, students from the Escuela Estados Unidos de América will participate in painting a large-scale mural on-site. The artwork will depict the restaurant’s sustainability features, such as its solar panels. Renowned national artist José Fernández will lead the project, providing the students with an introductory talk on color theory and guiding them through the creative process.
The grand opening celebration for the community is scheduled for Saturday, October 18th, starting at 11:00 a.m. The family-friendly event will feature carnival games, virtual reality experiences, stilt walkers, face painting, and storytellers. The festivities will culminate in a high-energy performance by the popular national band La Kuarta at 6:15 p.m., promising a memorable conclusion to the celebration.
This opening in Heredia, combined with recent inaugurations in Santa Ana (Ruta 27) and Grecia, has collectively created 106 new employment opportunities. These expansions reflect Arcos Dorados’ sustained confidence in the Costa Rican market and its ongoing investment in innovation, accessibility, and environmental stewardship, reaffirming its long-standing role in the country’s economic and social development.
