In these regions, human activities such as intensive agricultural irrigation and large-scale dam construction have drastically altered the natural freshwater cycle.

The deficit recorded across these 40 critical zones is staggering. Over the multi-decade study period, the net loss of freshwater storage reached 3,122 gigatons, heavily outpacing the net gain of just 2,432 gigatons.
