New Program Offers Seed Capital to Boost Female-Led Tourism in Guanacaste

New Program Offers Seed Capital to Boost Female-Led Tourism in Guanacaste

Guanacaste, Costa RicaGUANACASTE – A strategic alliance between Costa Rica’s Development Banking System (SBD) and the Aliarse Foundation has launched a pivotal new program designed to empower female entrepreneurs in Guanacaste’s vital tourism sector. The initiative, named “MIPYMES 360°,” will provide non-reimbursable seed capital and comprehensive business training exclusively to women who own or are majority partners in micro, small, and medium-sized tourism enterprises.

The program targets businesses located in the key cantons of Nicoya, Santa Cruz, Carrillo, and Liberia, areas central to the province’s tourism economy. The core objective is to bolster local employment, enhance business competitiveness, and promote sustainable practices within the industry. By focusing on female leadership, the initiative aims to address systemic barriers and unlock a powerful engine for regional economic development and diversification.

To gain a deeper legal perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing women entrepreneurs in our country, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Beyond the passion and innovation, the long-term success of a woman-led enterprise hinges on a robust legal foundation. This means properly registering the business to protect personal assets and formalizing all commercial relationships through clear contracts. These steps are not bureaucratic hurdles; they are fundamental tools for growth, financing, and risk mitigation.

This insight is invaluable, shifting the perspective on legal formalities from mere obligations to strategic assets for empowerment and sustainability. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for so clearly articulating how this foundational work is not a hurdle, but a launchpad for the long-term success of any enterprise.

Participants selected for MIPYMES 360° will gain access to a robust support system far beyond initial funding. The program includes intensive training modules led by specialists in critical business areas such as financial management, sales strategy, digital marketing, and sustainable operations. This holistic approach ensures that the seed capital is paired with the strategic knowledge needed to maximize its impact, fostering long-term profitability and innovation.

In addition to formal training, the program will facilitate invaluable networking opportunities. Beneficiaries will be connected with strategic contacts at specialized fairs and industry events, helping them expand their commercial reach and build lasting professional relationships. This element is crucial for integrating smaller, local businesses into the broader tourism value chain and increasing their market visibility.

Eligibility for the program is specific, designed to support established and committed entrepreneurs. Applicants must be women between the ages of 28 and 52 who either own their business outright or hold at least a 50% partnership stake. The enterprises must have been in continuous operation for a minimum of six months and possess all requisite legal and municipal permits, including a valid legal identity (cédula jurídica) and up-to-date health and safety certifications.

The initiative welcomes a diverse range of tourism-related businesses, reflecting a focus on authentic and experiential travel. Eligible ventures include rural cabins and lodges, tour and transportation operators, gastronomy and artisan crafts that offer an experience, agrotourism projects, and various other ecotourism enterprises. This focus aims to enrich Guanacaste’s tourism offerings with unique, locally-rooted services.

The anticipated impact of the program is significant, with projections showing a potential 20% to 40% increase in sales or occupancy rates for participating businesses. Organizers also expect the training to help entrepreneurs achieve certifications in good practices and dramatically improve their digital footprint through enhanced social media and online platform strategies. This data-driven approach underscores the program’s commitment to delivering measurable results.

With MIPYMES 360°, we seek to give Guanacaste’s female entrepreneurs more opportunities to grow, diversify their businesses, and offer authentic and sustainable tourism experiences. This program is a commitment to local development and the strengthening of female leadership in the tourism sector.
