San José, Costa Rica — SAN JOSÉ – In its latest strategic move to combat the capital’s chronic traffic congestion, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) has announced the implementation of a new reversible lane on the critical artery connecting Zapote and Curridabat. The measure, set to become operational this Monday, December 15th, targets one of the most persistently gridlocked corridors in eastern San José, offering a potential lifeline to thousands of daily commuters.
The new system will manage a heavily trafficked 500-meter stretch of road, specifically from the bridge over the María Aguilar River to the vicinity of the Curridabat Municipality. Officials have confirmed that the reversible lane will officially commence operations at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, marking a significant change in the traffic patterns for this densely populated area. The initiative is designed to dynamically adapt to the flow of vehicles throughout the day.

According to the operational plan released by MOPT, the lane will operate on a strict 12-hour cycle. From 2:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. daily, the reversible lane will exclusively serve traffic flowing from San José towards Curridabat, accommodating the morning rush and midday movements. Subsequently, from 2:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m., the direction will be flipped to favor traffic moving from Curridabat towards San José, aligning with the evening commute and nighttime activity.
This schedule was not arbitrarily chosen. MOPT officials justified the decision by citing extensive traffic flow studies conducted in the area. These analyses identified the specific peak hours and directional demand, allowing engineers to design a system that directly addresses the moments of greatest vehicular congestion. The ministry stated that the primary objective of this intervention is to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce travel times for the public.
To ensure driver safety and operational clarity, the corridor has been outfitted with a comprehensive system of specialized infrastructure. This includes new overhead traffic lights specifically designed for reversible lanes, clear vertical signage indicating the active direction, and distinct horizontal road markings. These elements are crucial for preventing driver confusion and minimizing the risk of head-on collisions, a primary concern with any reversible traffic system.
This project is not an isolated experiment but part of a broader, well-established strategy by transportation authorities to enhance mobility across the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM). A similar reversible lane was successfully launched in Sabanilla de Montes de Oca at the beginning of November. Furthermore, comparable systems have been in operation for some time on other key routes, including the main entrance to Heredia and the highway connecting Cartago and Paraíso, demonstrating a growing reliance on this traffic management technique.
The economic and social implications for the region are considerable. For daily commuters, the measure promises a reduction in the time, fuel, and stress associated with navigating the Zapote-Curridabat route. For businesses, smoother traffic flow can translate into more reliable logistics, timely deliveries, and a more productive workforce that spends less time idle in traffic. However, the initial weeks will be a critical test of driver adaptation and the system’s ability to prevent bottlenecks at its entry and exit points.
As San José continues to grapple with the challenges of urban growth, such innovative and flexible traffic management solutions represent a crucial tool in the ongoing effort to maintain mobility. While the new reversible lane is a targeted intervention, its success will be closely monitored by residents, businesses, and policymakers as a potential model for other congested corridors within the capital and beyond. The long-term impact on traffic patterns will ultimately determine if this is a lasting solution or simply a temporary reprieve.
