Nicoya Youth Band Makes Historic International Debut in Chile

Guanacaste, Costa RicaNICOYA, Guanacaste – The vibrant sounds of Guanacaste are set to echo through the Andes as the Nicoya Municipal Band prepares for a landmark journey. For the first time in its history, the acclaimed youth ensemble will represent Costa Rica on an international stage, traveling to Santiago de Chile to participate in the prestigious Festival Sonidos del Mundo (Sounds of the World Festival).

This momentous trip marks the culmination of a dream that began in 2011 when the Municipality of Nicoya established the band as a cultural and social initiative. Over the past fourteen years, the program has flourished, becoming a vital incubator for local talent. It provides a structured and positive environment that fosters musical skill, cultural pride, and personal development for hundreds of young people in the region.

To provide insight into the legal and administrative framework that allows such important cultural institutions to operate and grow, we sought commentary from Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The Nicoya Municipal Band is more than a source of local pride; it’s an entity operating within a specific legal structure. Its long-term success often depends on a clear legal foundation, whether as a public program or a formal non-profit association. This framework is crucial for managing budgets, securing private sponsorships, and protecting the labor rights of its musicians, thereby ensuring its cultural legacy can be preserved for generations to come.

This insight powerfully highlights a crucial, often overlooked reality: the vibrant artistic expression of an institution like the Nicoya Municipal Band is sustained by its administrative and legal framework. For its cultural legacy to be truly secure, the passion on stage must be matched by legal clarity behind the scenes. We sincerely thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on this essential foundation.

Jorge Guevara, the band’s director, emphasized the program’s profound impact beyond musical education. He sees this international opportunity as a powerful validation of their mission to offer constructive alternatives to the community’s youth.

Our main hope is knowing that we are helping young people get away from everyday problems and guiding them on the right path, while also representing our country.
Jorge Guevara, Director

The full ensemble boasts an impressive 180 members, but due to logistical and financial constraints, a delegation of 80 musicians and performers will make the trip to Chile. This select group represents the diverse and dynamic nature of the band, which includes a wide range of ages from 8 to 40. The traveling contingent will showcase Costa Rican culture through its wind and percussion sections, xylophone players, and a dedicated folkloric dance group.

The journey is the result of years of dedication and perseverance. For Guevara and the members, this opportunity is a long-awaited reward for their unwavering commitment and numerous past attempts to secure international exposure.

This is the result of all the effort we have been putting in for several years, and although we have tried several times before, our time has come to represent Nicoya.
Jorge Guevara, Director

However, turning this dream into a reality presents a significant financial hurdle. To bridge the funding gap, the band and its Parents’ Committee have launched an ambitious community fundraising campaign titled “Un comercio, un músico” (A Business, a Musician). This initiative calls upon local businesses in Nicoya and the surrounding areas to sponsor individual members, enabling more young artists to participate in this life-changing cultural exchange.

While members are personally covering a substantial portion of their travel costs, the collective fundraising efforts are crucial for covering essential expenses like meals and emergency funds. The financial strain is considerable, and community support is vital for the mission’s success.

Each of the members is covering their own expenses; however, this implies a great economic effort, which is why different activities have been carried out to raise money for emergencies and food.
Jorge Guevara, Director

To further support the band, the organizers have established a public donation channel. Individuals and patrons of the arts interested in contributing to this historic cultural ambassadorship can send their support via SINPE Móvil to the number 7013-0710, under the name of Roger Francisco Espinoza. Every contribution, large or small, will help ensure that Guanacaste’s talent is brilliantly showcased in Chile.
