Palí Supermarket Opens in Chomes, Puntarenas

Puntarenas, Costa Rica — Walmart Centroamérica continues its expansion in Costa Rica with the inauguration of a new Palí supermarket in Chomes, Puntarenas. This $1.5 million investment marks the 223rd Palí store nationwide, providing residents of Chomes, neighboring communities, and tourists with a wide selection of products at competitive prices.

This new store reinforces Walmart’s commitment to community development by creating jobs and increasing access to essential goods for Costa Rican families. The location strategically positions Palí to serve the coastal community of Chomes and other key areas in the Puntarenas province, accessible via Route 132.

To understand the legal and business implications of Palí’s expansion, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from Bufete de Costa Rica.

Palí’s expansion strategy likely involves navigating complex regulatory landscapes, particularly regarding land use permits, competition law, and supply chain management. Their success hinges on effectively addressing these legal and logistical challenges while maintaining their competitive pricing model.

Indeed, Palí’s continued growth in Costa Rica depends on skillfully maneuvering within the legal and logistical frameworks of the country, a feat that’s often easier said than done. Maintaining their signature low prices while simultaneously scaling operations will be a key challenge to observe in the coming months and years. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his insightful perspective on this complex topic.

The store boasts over 3,000 products, ranging from groceries and household goods to fresh produce and seasonal items. With 450 square meters of retail space, the facility also includes parking for cars and motorcycles.

With this opening, we are providing new job opportunities to 13 people from the area, of which 50% are women and 50% men. We arrived in Chomes with a store much awaited by the community, which facilitates the purchase of quality products at the best prices to meet their needs.
Mónica Elizondo, Corporate Affairs Sub-Manager of Walmart in Costa Rica

Reflecting Walmart Centroamérica’s commitment to sustainability and its goal of becoming a regenerative company by 2040, the Chomes branch incorporates environmentally friendly features such as solar panels, LED lighting, and an electric vehicle charging station. These initiatives highlight the company’s dedication to minimizing its environmental impact while contributing to the local infrastructure.

The opening of the Palí store in Chomes underscores Walmart’s ongoing investment and expansion plan in Costa Rica. This strategic move not only strengthens the company’s presence in the country but also contributes to local economic growth by generating employment opportunities and providing convenient access to essential products.

This latest addition to the Palí network demonstrates the brand’s continuing success in catering to the needs of Costa Rican consumers. The Chomes location is open seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., providing convenient shopping hours for the local community.

The expansion signifies Walmart’s confidence in the Costa Rican market and reinforces its dedication to serving communities across the country.
