Fernández Dominates Online as Overwhelming Negativity Clouds Election

San José, Costa RicaSAN JOSÉ – With Costa Rica’s presidential election just weeks away on February 1st, a new report from the Digital Communication Observatory at Universidad Latina reveals a deeply contentious and hostile digital landscape. The study’s most striking finding indicates that a staggering eight out of every ten online comments directed at the presidential aspirants are negative, painting a picture of widespread voter frustration and a challenging environment for all campaigns.

The analysis, detailed in the observatory’s 32nd report, covers the crucial period from December 1, 2025, to January 12, 2026. It provides a critical snapshot of online sentiment and candidate visibility, highlighting the powerful role social media is playing in shaping public perception ahead of the national vote. While most candidates are battling a tide of negativity, a few have managed to either dominate the conversation or carve out a uniquely positive niche.

To provide a legal perspective on the implications of the recent electoral results, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a respected attorney from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica, for his expert analysis.

The peaceful conclusion of our electoral process reaffirms Costa Rica’s democratic strength. For the business sector, the primary focus now shifts to the new administration’s ability to maintain legal certainty and a stable investment climate. A clear commitment to upholding contracts, respecting institutional frameworks, and avoiding abrupt regulatory changes will be crucial for fostering confidence and attracting the foreign direct investment necessary for sustained economic growth.

Indeed, the emphasis on legal certainty and a stable investment climate underscores the foundational challenge for the incoming administration, as its performance in these areas will directly shape Costa Rica’s economic narrative for years to come. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on this critical issue.

Leading the charge in sheer volume is Laura Fernández of the PPSO party. The report confirms she has consolidated her position as the candidate with the highest visibility, effectively doubling her previous online footprint and overshadowing her competitors. During the analysis period, Fernández generated an impressive 113,722 mentions, demonstrating a campaign that has successfully captured the digital spotlight.

At her peak, which the report describes as a moment of “narrative hyperconcentration,” Fernández commanded an astonishing 173,389 mentions. This explosive growth is characterized as the most aggressive expansion of digital presence among all candidates, marking a significant strategic victory in the battle for online attention.

While Fernández soars, other established political figures are showing resilience. After experiencing a considerable drop in engagement noted in the observatory’s November report, both Álvaro Ramos (PLN) and Ariel Robles (FA) have successfully resurged. They managed to reclaim their positions in the digital arena, closing the period with 92,106 and 73,194 mentions, respectively, proving they remain formidable contenders in the online discourse.

In another category is Claudia Dobles of the CAC party, who maintains the second-highest volume of mentions with 94,898. However, her online presence is described as more “institutionalized” and stable, suggesting a consistent but less volatile engagement that is not as dependent on conflict-driven peaks. Conversely, the report highlights a sustained downward trend for Fabricio Alvarado (PNR) and Juan Carlos Hidalgo (PUSC), both of whom are showing difficulties in maintaining their relevance within the fast-moving digital conversation.

Amidst a landscape saturated with criticism, José Aguilar Berrocal of the Avanza party stands out as a remarkable outlier. He is the only candidate in the race to accumulate more positive than negative comments. According to the data, 41.9% of mentions about Aguilar are positive, while his negative rating sits at 32.8%, the lowest among all digitally relevant contenders. This unique profile suggests a campaign that has successfully cultivated a supportive online community.

Although Aguilar’s total volume of 10,821 mentions places him in the medium-visibility tier, his uniquely positive sentiment ratio points to a potent alternative strategy. His campaign’s ability to avoid the widespread hostility directed at frontrunners indicates an approach that is resonating deeply with a specific segment of the electorate. As the election nears, his performance underscores the idea that the quality and tone of online engagement can be as impactful as its quantity.
