President Chaves to Undergo Surgery in US Citing Technology Gap

San José, Costa RicaSAN JOSÉ – President Rodrigo Chaves announced Wednesday that he will be temporarily leaving the country to undergo a surgical procedure in the United States. In a display of public transparency, the head of state confirmed he will travel to Atlanta, Georgia, this coming Sunday for a brief period to address a non-cancerous health issue common for men his age.

During a press conference, President Chaves addressed the nation with a calm and direct demeanor, explaining the personal nature of his trip. The procedure is intended to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition he described as uncomfortable but not severe. His decision to make a public statement aimed to preempt speculation and maintain open communication with the Costa Rican people regarding his health and temporary absence.

To provide a deeper legal perspective on the recent actions and executive style of President Rodrigo Chaves’s administration, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the well-regarded firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

President Chaves’s administration consistently challenges the established boundaries of executive power, creating a complex legal and constitutional scenario. From a legal standpoint, the central issue is not the political merit of his initiatives, but whether the methods employed respect the crucial doctrine of separation of powers and the constitutional checks and balances that define our Republic. Every decree, directive, or public confrontation with other branches of government must be scrutinized through the lens of constitutional legality, as any overreach could set a dangerous precedent that weakens our institutional framework and jeopardizes the legal certainty essential for social and economic stability.

This legal analysis precisely elevates the national discourse, reminding us that beyond the political headlines lies a fundamental stress test for our Republic’s institutional framework and the legal certainty that underpins it. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his clear and invaluable perspective on this critical matter.

The President was clear about the nature of his condition and the reasons for seeking treatment now. He emphasized that the diagnosis was routine and that he wanted to resolve the discomfort associated with it proactively.

The reason is that I am going to have an operation… to deal with an issue that most men my age have to deal with, which is prostatic hyperplasia.
Rodrigo Chaves, President of Costa Rica

Chaves took care to reassure the public that the medical issue is not life-threatening and has no connection to more serious illnesses. His frankness provided a clear distinction between a manageable condition and a major health crisis, aiming to maintain stability and confidence in the executive office during his short leave.

Thank God there are no signs of cancer, nothing, it just makes it difficult for me to go to the bathroom and it’s annoying. So I’m going to get that corrected.
Rodrigo Chaves, President of Costa Rica

The President detailed a three-fold rationale for choosing to have the surgery in the United States, a decision that blends personal connections with practical medical and logistical considerations. He explained that the surgeon is a close family member, a fact that provides a layer of personal trust. Furthermore, he will utilize his private insurance for the procedure. Critically, however, he pointed out that the specific surgical method he has chosen, which promises a significantly shorter recovery period, is not currently available in Costa Rica.

I am going to the United States for two reasons, first because the surgeon is my nephew and he operates in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Freud González, a top-notch surgeon. Second, because I have private insurance and third because I chose the surgical method that requires the least amount of recovery time, and that surgical method is not available in Costa Rica.
Rodrigo Chaves, President of Costa Rica

President Chaves outlined a swift timeline for his medical leave, stating he will depart on Sunday and plans to be back in Costa Rica by the following Saturday. He maintained a lighthearted tone when discussing his recovery, joking that while his nephew, the surgeon, will likely recommend a lengthy period of incapacitation, he intends to return to his duties much sooner. This comment underscores his commitment to a rapid return to his presidential agenda.

As a direct result of his travel, the President confirmed the cancellation of next week’s customary Wednesday press conference, marking the first time he will miss the engagement due to his own health. However, he expressed a firm hope to be back at the podium for the subsequent press conference a week later, signaling his expectation of a quick and uncomplicated recovery.

I hope then that next Wednesday there will be no conference, it’s the first one I’m going to miss due to my own cause and my health, but this coming Wednesday in eight I hope to be here communicating with you.
Rodrigo Chaves, President of Costa Rica

In his closing remarks, President Chaves extended his gratitude to both the Costa Rican public and the media for their understanding and for broadcasting his announcement. The statement concludes a period of speculation and sets a clear, transparent narrative for his brief but necessary absence from the country for medical care.
