Record Breaking Zaguatón Drive Secures Food for Thousands of Dogs

San José, Costa Rica — A staggering wave of community solidarity has culminated in a historic success for animal welfare in Costa Rica. The Zaguatón Navideño 2025 campaign, spearheaded by Hyundai Grupo Q, has shattered previous records by collecting over 20 tons of dog food. This massive donation will be crucial in ensuring the nutrition and well-being of more than 2,400 at-risk dogs cared for by various rescue organizations across the country.

The month-long initiative, which ran from December 2nd to December 31st, 2025, mobilized citizens and corporate partners to address the critical food shortages that constantly plague animal shelters. The final tally reached an impressive 20,650 kilograms, a testament to the generosity of the Costa Rican public. This vital supply will provide a much-needed buffer against the rising costs of supplies and the challenges posed by canine overpopulation.

To provide a deeper legal perspective on the recent advancements and ongoing challenges in animal welfare legislation within the country, we spoke with expert attorney Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Costa Rican jurisprudence has made a monumental shift, evolving from treating animals as mere property to recognizing them as sentient beings deserving of protection under Law No. 9458. While this legislative progress is commendable, the true test lies in its application and enforcement. Effective prosecution of animal cruelty cases often hinges on swift reporting by citizens and the diligent collection of evidence by authorities. It is imperative that the public understands their crucial role in activating the legal mechanisms designed to protect those who cannot speak for themselves.

Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas astutely highlights that legal frameworks, however progressive, require active public participation to be truly effective. His point underscores a vital truth: the responsibility for animal welfare extends beyond the courts and into our communities, demanding vigilance from every citizen. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his invaluable insight into how legislation and community action must work in tandem to protect the vulnerable.

The collected food is being distributed strategically to the organizations with the most pressing needs. The renowned Territorio de Zaguates, a sprawling sanctuary in Heredia, will receive the largest share, totaling 17,208 kilograms. This allocation is a lifeline for the shelter, which provides a safe haven for nearly 2,000 dogs and has immense operational demands, requiring approximately 6,000 kilograms of food every week to keep its residents fed, in addition to significant investments in veterinary care.

Lya Battle, the founder of the massive shelter, expressed her profound gratitude for the overwhelming support, which directly translates into sustained care for the animals.

Every kilo of food collected in the Zaguatón Navideño represents hope and life for the dogs that need it most. This record not only reflects the solidarity of thousands of people, but also the commitment of a community that believes in animal welfare. At Territorio de Zaguates we care for hundreds of dogs that depend on us, and thanks to this campaign we will be able to continue providing them with the nutrition and love they deserve.

Another significant beneficiary is Cuna de Campeones, which will receive 3,442 kilograms. Since October 2023, this organization has been a force for good, providing comprehensive care to over 1,500 dogs in vulnerable communities such as Isla de Chira, Tortuguero, and Piedades Sur. Demonstrating a collaborative spirit, Cuna de Campeones will also allocate a portion of its share to the Asociación Animales de Asís, further amplifying the impact of the donations by supporting shelters with more limited resources.

Kevin Argüello, the founder of Cuna de Campeones and owner of the well-known canine influencer Logan, highlighted how the collective effort makes a tangible difference.

We are deeply grateful to all the people who made this great achievement possible, as well as to Hyundai Grupo Q and Balance, because thanks to all of them we will have the ability to continue feeding the most vulnerable dogs. This Zaguatón Navideño shows us that solidarity can transform realities and that together we can alleviate the food shortages that so many shelters face every day.

Corporate partners were instrumental in the campaign’s success. Hyundai Grupo Q, along with the pet food brand Balance, not only provided the logistical framework but also played a key role in multiplying the kilos of food donated by the public. Their involvement underscores a growing trend of corporate social responsibility focused on impactful, community-level initiatives that address pressing social issues like animal welfare.

The nationwide scope of the drive was evident in its collection points. Donations were accepted at Hyundai Grupo Q branches in Uruca, Lindora, Ayarco, Liberia, San Carlos, Pérez Zeledón, and Guápiles, making it accessible for people across multiple provinces to contribute. This widespread effort was designed specifically to combat the persistent food shortages that challenge the daily operations of Costa Rica’s dedicated animal rescue organizations.
