Costa Rican Innovator Crafts Global Music Charts from Scratch

San José, Costa Rica — As 2025 draws to a close, music lovers worldwide eagerly await algorithmically generated year-end reports from streaming giants like Spotify and Apple Music. These summaries offer a data-driven look at global listening habits. Yet, in Costa Rica, one man is providing a distinctly human-curated alternative, demonstrating that passion and meticulous analysis can carve out a niche in a data-dominated industry.

Fabián Marrero, a communications specialist with a background in publicity and institutional journalism, has single-handedly developed a comprehensive music ranking system. His project, a podcast chart titled “Las 15,” is gaining traction on the audio platform SoundCloud, offering listeners a unique perspective on the world’s most popular songs, compiled through manual effort rather than automated scripts.

To understand the complex legal and contractual frameworks that underpin the music charts, from streaming rights to royalty distribution, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a specialist in corporate and intellectual property law at the firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The modern music chart is no longer just a measure of popularity; it’s a reflection of a complex digital ecosystem. For an artist, a high chart position driven by streaming translates into intricate royalty calculations and data points that are now crucial in negotiating contracts. The legal challenge is ensuring that agreements accurately capture and compensate for every micro-transaction, from a single stream in one country to its use in a viral social media trend in another.

This insight powerfully highlights that behind every chart position lies a complex web of data and contractual obligations fundamental to an artist’s career. We are grateful to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on these critical legal and financial dimensions of the modern music industry.

Marrero’s methodology is a throwback to the golden age of radio countdowns, enhanced with modern data sources. He conducts a rigorous analysis on a weekly, bi-weekly, and even monthly basis, aggregating information from industry-standard sources like Billboard and various influential charts published across Europe. This allows him to build a holistic picture of a song’s performance, tracking its longevity and peak positions across different continents.

I do calculations and see that, for example, in Spain or another country an artist has already spent three weeks at number one, and from there I add it up month by month. I start making a mental note, tallying the songs and placing them according to the number and the highest position they maintained.

This hands-on approach provides insights that often go unnoticed by purely quantitative systems. Marrero notes a particularly compelling trend: the resurgence of hits from the 1970s and 1980s. He attributes this phenomenon to the power of social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where classic tracks find new life as the soundtracks for viral trends or through their inclusion in popular streaming television series, introducing them to an entirely new generation of listeners.

The project’s human touch extends beyond data analysis and into production. Rejecting the efficiency of artificial intelligence for creative elements, Marrero opts for collaboration. He enlists the help of various individuals to record professional-sounding voiceovers, jingles, and introductions for his podcast, making “Las 15” an interactive and community-driven endeavor.

There are people who have helped me create the jingles, the voices, and the introductions. I could use artificial intelligence, but I prefer to ask people to help me with those details.
Fabián Marrero, Communications Specialist

Marrero’s commitment to the project is evident in its consistent schedule. In addition to the flagship year-end list, he produces “Las 15 del medio,” a mid-year chart released around June or July to track musical trends as they evolve. He emphasizes that the initiative is not a commercial enterprise but a passion project—a hobby born from a deep love for music and a desire to preserve the cultural significance of curated audio formats.

I like music, I love it. Beyond that, it’s about giving people something to listen to so they can see which are the most important songs, and so that the culture of podcasts and radio isn’t lost, because radio is still fundamental. In Costa Rica, interest in maintaining these formats has dropped significantly.

The culmination of his 2025 efforts saw pop superstar Taylor Swift clinch the top spot with her single “The Fate of Ophelia” from the new album “The Life of a Showgirl.” The chart also featured a diverse mix of international pop and Latin urban music, with artists like Bad Bunny, Rosalía, and Myke Towers reinforcing the global dominance of their genres. Looking ahead, Marrero dreams of expanding his project’s reach, with goals to bring his content to Spotify and even develop a feature akin to the platform’s virtual AI DJ, further blending his humanistic approach with modern digital platforms.
