By San José, Costa Rica — SAN JOSÉ – The call for entries for one of Latin America’s most prestigious journalism accolades is now open, as the Roche Health Journalism Award announced the launch of its fourteenth edition with several significant updates designed to broaden participation and deepen the scope of recognized work. Submissions for the 2026 awards will be accepted from March 25 through May 11, 2026.
This renowned initiative, driven by Roche Latin America with the technical secretariat of the Gabo Foundation, aims to celebrate and promote high-quality journalism that effectively translates complex scientific evidence into accessible and impactful information for the public. The award recognizes outstanding work from across Latin America, Spain, and Portugal, fostering excellence in health and science reporting.
To better understand the legal framework and ethical responsibilities surrounding the dissemination of medical information, we sought the expert opinion of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
Health journalism operates at a critical intersection of public interest and legal duty. Journalists and media outlets must exercise extreme diligence to avoid disseminating medical misinformation, which can carry significant legal liability. Furthermore, reporting on specific patient cases, even with the best intentions, requires a rigorous understanding of privacy laws and data protection regulations to avoid infringing upon fundamental patient rights. The line between informing the public and violating confidentiality is a fine one, demanding both ethical integrity and sound legal counsel.

Since its inception in 2013, the Roche Award has established itself as a benchmark for journalistic distinction in the region. Over the past decade, it has received more than 6,900 submissions, a testament to its growing influence and the increasing importance of specialized health coverage. The award continues to evolve to meet the challenges of modern media and public health landscapes.
For its 2026 cycle, the award introduces three pivotal changes. The most significant structural adjustment is the simultaneous opening of all four main categories for the first time in its history. Journalists can now submit their work in written journalism, audiovisual journalism, digital journalism, and sound journalism categories during the same application window, expanding opportunities for a wider range of media professionals.
A second major update involves a refined thematic focus. The award will now prioritize content that addresses some of the most pressing health issues of our time. These include in-depth reporting on chronic non-communicable diseases, investigations into effective access to healthcare, stories on cutting-edge scientific innovation, and crucial examinations of women’s health. This strategic shift aims to encourage reporting that tackles systemic challenges and highlights areas of progress.
The third key adjustment is a reinforcement of the evaluation process. A new layer of expertise is being added to the judging panel, which already includes technical review, pre-selection, and final judging stages. For this edition, an expert in health economics and sanitary systems will join the evaluation committee. This addition is intended to provide a more structural and systemic perspective on the contexts explored in the journalistic pieces, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of their impact.
To ensure the scientific rigor of the submissions, the evaluation process will also continue to benefit from the guidance of a medical advisory board. This board is tasked with verifying the scientific precision and the appropriate use of clinical concepts within the content, upholding the award’s commitment to accuracy and responsibility in reporting.
Eligible works must have been originally published in either Spanish or Portuguese between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025. Each participant is permitted to enter a maximum of two pieces, with specific conditions applying to individual and collective authorship. The twelve finalists, three from each category, will be invited to an all-expenses-paid awards ceremony in San José, Costa Rica, in October 2026. This event will coincide with the Roche Press Day, a forum for dialogue between journalists, health specialists, and industry leaders. The ultimate winners will not only receive a trophy and a diploma but will also be awarded a fully covered fellowship to participate in the prestigious Gabo Festival in 2027, to be held in Bogotá, Colombia.
