The sidewalk initiative is particularly robust, with plans to build over 21 kilometers of new pedestrian pathways across the city. These are not just simple concrete slabs; the project includes the integration of modern urban furniture, strategic tree planting for shade and beautification, and critical accessibility elements. This design ensures that the new infrastructure will specifically benefit vulnerable populations, including senior citizens, children, and individuals with disabilities, promoting greater independence and safer movement throughout the capital.
Momentum for this city-wide transformation is already building. Currently, there are 80 active work sites spread across San José’s 11 districts. A key aspect of the strategy is its tailored approach to park design, moving away from a one-size-fits-all model. The municipality is developing new themed parks in key sectors like Parque del Bosque, Colonia Kennedy, Finca San Juan, and Hatillo, with each design meticulously adapted to the local demographic and environment.
