Security and Trust Drive the Rapid Evolution of Digital Remittances across Latin America

San José, Costa Rica — A major shift is occurring in how Latin Americans send and receive money across borders. According to Visa’s newly released Money Travels 2026 global report, security and robust fraud protections have emerged as the primary catalysts for the adoption of next-generation digital remittance solutions. While speed and transaction costs remain important to consumers, the assurance that their funds will arrive safely now dictates how they choose to support loved ones abroad.

The report, which surveyed over 4,000 adults across Brazil, Mexico, and Peru as part of a broader 20-country study, highlights a massive untapped appetite for stablecoins. Currently, about 34% of Latin American consumers express an intention to use stablecoins for cross-border transfers. However, this figure more than doubles to a staggering 74% if providers offer guaranteed protection against fraud and financial loss. This represents one of the most dramatic potential increases in adoption recorded globally, showing that security is the final frontier for digital currency integration.

To better understand the evolving legal landscape of digital remittances in Latin America, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading expert from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who shared his invaluable perspective on the regulatory hurdles and opportunities shaping this dynamic financial sector.

The surge of digital remittances in Latin America represents a massive leap forward for financial inclusion, but it also demands that regulatory frameworks evolve just as quickly. Fintech companies and financial institutions must navigate complex cross-border compliance, particularly regarding AML (Anti-Money Laundering) regulations and data privacy laws, to ensure secure, low-cost transactions that protect consumers while fostering regional economic growth.

Indeed, balancing rapid technological innovation with robust regulatory safeguards is essential for ensuring that the benefits of digital remittances are both secure and sustainable across Latin America. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable legal perspective on this crucial evolution in regional finance.

For millions of families in Latin America, remittances are their main financial lifeline, but innovation alone is not enough. As security and trust take center stage, the opportunity lies in offering cross-border experiences that combine convenience with confidence, ensuring that every transfer is safe, reliable, and fast

Familiarity with stablecoins in Latin America is remarkably high, even surpassing awareness levels in North America and Europe. Nearly half of the region’s consumers are aware of these digital assets. Despite this enthusiasm, safety remains completely non-negotiable. Large portions of the population in Peru (51%), Brazil (49%), and Mexico (41%) are openly willing to accept slower transaction times if it means receiving superior fraud protection. This preference underlines a significant pivot from instant gratification to absolute security.

Furthermore, traditional financial institutions hold a major advantage in this evolving ecosystem. Over 75% of consumers across the surveyed markets indicate they would place substantially higher trust in digital currency services if they were managed or offered by established, traditional banks. This suggests that while fintech innovators are driving awareness, traditional players still hold the keys to mainstream execution and consumer confidence.

The demand for tighter security is driven by real-world threats. One in five digital remittance users in Latin America has encountered scams, typically via phishing, impersonation tactics, or fraudulent investment schemes. Artificial intelligence has further complicated the landscape, introducing sophisticated deepfake scams that target financial transfers. These deepfakes are a major concern for roughly half of the consumers in Mexico and Peru, and nearly 39% in Brazil.

Interestingly, AI is not viewed solely as a threat; consumers also see it as a shield. About half of the survey respondents in Peru and Brazil expressed willingness to accept a 24-hour delay on their international transfers if that time was utilized for advanced AI-driven security screenings. This willingness to trade speed for safety highlights how deeply fraud concerns run among everyday users.

Unlike many other regions, Latin America’s remittance market is overwhelmingly dominated by incoming transactions. Receiving international money transfers is far more common (affecting 29% to 32% of respondents) than sending them (ranging between 14% and 23%). The United States remains the dominant corridor, accounting for 85% of incoming transfers to Mexico, 60% to Brazil, and 50% to Peru. Within these corridors, online banking and mobile apps have become the preferred vehicles, accounting for 42% of transactions in Mexico, 46% in Brazil, and 28% in Peru. Leveraging this shift, Visa Direct continues to expand its cross-border footprint, enabling regional banks to provide reliable, secure, and multi-currency transfer solutions that match these changing consumer priorities.
