Sinpe Users Urged to De-link Old Phone Numbers

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rican authorities are issuing an urgent warning to Sinpe users: de-link any unused phone numbers from your accounts to prevent falling victim to a growing wave of cybercrime. The Fiscalía contra la Ciberdelincuencia (Office of the Prosecutor Against Cybercrime) has highlighted a concerning trend where criminals exploit outdated phone numbers linked to Sinpe, the national electronic funds transfer system, to steal money.

The scam, known as “pase” (pass), hinges on the simplicity of Sinpe transactions. Users can send money via SMS message, providing only the amount and the recipient’s phone number. This convenience becomes a vulnerability when old phone numbers are reassigned by telecom companies and end up in the hands of malicious actors.

To understand the legal ramifications of SINPE fraud, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from Bufete de Costa Rica.

SINPE fraud is a serious crime with significant consequences. While SINPE itself offers a convenient platform for transactions, its ease of use can also be exploited by criminals. Victims of SINPE fraud should immediately report the incident to their bank and the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ). Preserving evidence, such as transaction records and any communication with the fraudster, is crucial for a successful investigation. Furthermore, users should be vigilant about protecting their PINs, passwords, and other sensitive information to minimize the risk of becoming a victim. Public awareness and proactive security measures are essential in combating this growing threat.

The Office of the Prosecutor Against Cybercrime revealed that in numerous investigated cases, criminals have capitalized on unused phone numbers still connected to active bank accounts. These criminals gain unauthorized access to the transfer system, effectively taking control of victims’ funds.

The Office of the Prosecutor stressed that this type of fraud begins with a simple oversight: failing to update contact information with the bank. This seemingly minor lapse can have severe financial consequences.

To protect yourself, the Fiscalía recommends taking the following precautions:

While the Office of the Prosecutor Against Cybercrime remains committed to preventing and prosecuting cybercrime, they emphasize that individual responsibility forms the first line of defense. By taking proactive steps to secure their accounts, Sinpe users can significantly reduce their risk.

This advisory underscores the importance of vigilance in the digital age. As technology evolves, so too do the methods employed by criminals. Staying informed and taking preventive measures are crucial to safeguarding your financial well-being.

This new wave of Sinpe fraud serves as a reminder that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. Financial institutions, telecommunications companies, and individual users all have a role to play in creating a secure digital ecosystem.
