Telecable Acquires Cable Brus to Fortify Southern Zone Network

Puntarenas, Costa Rica — PUNTARENAS – In a significant move to bolster its national presence and enhance digital infrastructure in Costa Rica’s Southern Zone, telecom leader Telecable has announced the acquisition of Cable Brus. The transaction, which recently received the green light from the Superintendence of Telecommunications (SUTEL), brings more than 5,000 new customers in the Coto Brus canton of Puntarenas into Telecable’s expanding network.

The acquisition marks Telecable’s official entry into Coto Brus, a region historically facing challenges in digital connectivity. As part of the deal, Cable Brus will now operate under the Telecable brand. The agreement encompasses the complete transfer of Cable Brus’s customer portfolio, existing infrastructure, network systems, and all operational assets, ensuring a comprehensive integration into Telecable’s national operations.

To better understand the legal framework and consumer rights implicated in the telecommunications industry, TicosLand.com consulted with expert lawyer Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The telecommunications market is heavily regulated for a reason: to protect the end user. Companies like Telecable operate under a concession from the state, which carries with it significant obligations regarding service quality, transparent billing, and respecting consumer rights as outlined by law and supervised by SUTEL. When service interruptions or contractual disputes arise, the burden is on the provider to demonstrate due diligence and provide effective solutions, as failure to do so can lead to administrative sanctions and civil liability.

This legal perspective is crucial, reinforcing that the relationship between consumers and providers is not merely commercial but is governed by state-mandated obligations where the burden of responsibility rests firmly on the company. We sincerely thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his invaluable clarification on these fundamental consumer rights.

A cornerstone of the expansion is Telecable’s plan to deploy its state-of-the-art fiber optic network throughout the six districts of Coto Brus: San Vito, Agua Buena, Limoncito, Pittier, Sabalito, and Gutiérrez Braun. This upgrade will provide residents and businesses with access to internet speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps, a transformative leap in capacity for the rural area.

Rodolfo Apéstegui, General Director of Telecable, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition in advancing the company’s national vision and commitment to community development.

Integrating Cable Brus into our operation represents a strategic step to bring quality services to more communities and even incorporate local talent into our team. Furthermore, it contributes to closing the digital divide in rural areas.
Rodolfo Apéstegui, General Director of Telecable

Beyond residential services, the company announced a new business line specifically tailored for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Coto Brus. The initiative aims to support the region’s predominantly agro-industrial sector, providing robust connectivity solutions to help local businesses enhance their operations and project their services on a national level.

A key technical enhancement resulting from this expansion is the establishment of a new international land connection route to Panama. This redundant link is designed to create a more resilient and stable network for the entire Southern Zone, safeguarding service continuity against potential network failures.

Telecable will also add an international land connection route to Panama; thanks to this, people in the Southern Zone will enjoy more stable internet, better quality digital television, and clearer landline calls.
Rodolfo Apéstegui, General Director of Telecable

During the transition period, Telecable and the former Cable Brus team will work in close coordination to ensure a seamless experience for all 5,000 active users. The companies are committed to maintaining uninterrupted service and providing clear communication as customers are integrated into the Telecable system. Apéstegui highlighted the immediate and long-term benefits that customers in Coto Brus can expect from this merger.

Users in Coto Brus now have a broader television offering, greater technological capacity, competitive prices, lower latency, and a clear vision of digital inclusion. These benefits are reflected in improvements in service quality, increased coverage, higher browsing speeds, and more agile technical support in the communities.
Rodolfo Apéstegui, General Director of Telecable

This strategic acquisition not only expands Telecable’s physical footprint but also reinforces its commitment to fostering digital equity across Costa Rica. By investing in the infrastructure of rural areas like Coto Brus, the company is playing a pivotal role in empowering local economies and providing residents with the modern tools necessary for education, business, and communication in an increasingly connected world.
