DiDi and Chamber of Commerce Drive Voter Turnout with Election Day Discounts

San José, Costa RicaSan José, Costa Rica – In a strategic move to bolster civic engagement, ride-sharing giant DiDi has partnered with the Costa Rican Chamber of Commerce (CCCR) to provide significant transportation discounts on election day. The initiative, set for Sunday, February 1st, aims to remove logistical barriers for voters, making it easier and more affordable for citizens to reach polling stations across several key regions of the country.

This public-private partnership is designed to address common election day challenges such as traffic congestion, scarce parking, and general mobility issues, which can often deter potential voters. By leveraging DiDi’s extensive transportation network, the collaboration seeks to facilitate a smoother, more accessible democratic process and encourage a higher level of participation from the electorate in this crucial national event.

To delve into the legal nuances surrounding transportation services on election day, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished legal expert from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica, for his analysis on the matter.

The principle of voter freedom is paramount under our electoral code. While private transportation initiatives can enhance civic participation, they must be carefully structured to avoid any semblance of undue influence or vote-buying, which is strictly prohibited. The line between facilitating access and exerting partisan pressure is thin, and any organized effort, even if well-intentioned, could face scrutiny from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal if not implemented with absolute neutrality.

The distinction highlighted by Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas is indeed the crux of the matter; any initiative, no matter how well-intentioned, must navigate this fine line with impeccable neutrality to uphold the integrity of our electoral process. We thank him for his clear and valuable legal perspective on this important civic issue.

Under the terms of the promotion, voters can access discounts of up to 30% on their rides to and from polling centers. The offer is valid for trips requested through DiDi Express, DiDi Pon Tu Precio, and DiDi Taxi services. To claim the discount, users must enter the promotional code VOTACONDIDI in the app. The benefit will be active from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day, or until the promotional budget is exhausted. The offer is limited to one use per passenger.

In an additional effort to attract new users and maximize participation, DiDi is offering an even more substantial incentive for first-time riders. Individuals who download the DiDi application and register for the first time on February 1st will automatically receive a special benefit of up to 50% off their first ride. This credit will be applied directly to the user’s in-app wallet, providing a powerful motive for new customers to engage with the platform while exercising their right to vote.

We believe that technology can be an ally in strengthening citizen participation and supporting key moments for the country. With this alliance, we aim to facilitate comfortable, reliable, and efficient transportation, reducing barriers such as traffic or parking during this democratic celebration.

The initiative’s geographic scope is comprehensive, covering the entire Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM), which includes the urban centers of San José, Alajuela, Heredia, and Cartago. Furthermore, the discounts will be available in the key cities of Limón, Liberia, and San Carlos, ensuring that a wide cross-section of the Costa Rican population can benefit. To support the expected increase in demand, DiDi has also announced special promotions for its driver-partners, incentivizing them to be active throughout the day to support the democratic process and increase their earnings.

With this initiative, we are making a concrete contribution to the electoral process by facilitating mobility during the voting day. This effort is complemented by actions aimed at promoting an informed vote and greater citizen participation.
Arturo Rosabal Arce, President of the CCCR

This collaboration highlights a growing trend of corporate social responsibility initiatives that directly support democratic institutions. By aligning business objectives with civic duty, both DiDi and the Chamber of Commerce are positioning themselves as key contributors to the nation’s welfare. The program serves as a model for how technology and business can be harnessed to overcome societal challenges and foster a more engaged and active citizenry.
