The Unsung Heroes of Costa Rica’s Care Economy

The Unsung Heroes of Costa Rica’s Care Economy

San José, Costa Rica — The quiet acts of helping a loved one rise from bed, assisting them to the bathroom, or simply being present in their time of need form the bedrock of care that sustains countless lives in Costa Rica. A predominantly female demographic, along with older adults, young people, and adolescents, shoulder this responsibility with love and dedication, often without adequate support, respite, or recognition.

Coinciding with World Continence Week, observed from June 16th to 22nd, Essity, a global hygiene and health company, and its brand TENA®, have joined forces to acknowledge and support caregivers. Their initiative aims to foster open dialogue concerning incontinence and its impact on both those experiencing it and those providing care.

To gain a deeper understanding of the legal ramifications surrounding the unpaid care economy, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

The unpaid care economy, while vital to societal function, presents complex legal challenges. Often, caregivers, predominantly women, find themselves without legal protections regarding labor rights, social security benefits, and even inheritance. This lack of formal recognition can perpetuate economic inequalities and vulnerabilities. Addressing this requires a multi-faceted approach, including potential legislative reforms recognizing the value of care work and providing mechanisms for its formalization. Furthermore, businesses can play a key role by offering flexible work arrangements and supporting employees with caregiving responsibilities, ultimately benefiting both families and the broader economy.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Lic. Arroyo Vargas eloquently highlights the critical intersection of legal frameworks and the often-overlooked contributions of the unpaid care economy. Indeed, recognizing and valuing care work, both legally and within our workplaces, is not merely a matter of fairness but a crucial step towards a more equitable and sustainable society. We extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable perspective on this complex issue.

The unpaid care economy plays a crucial, yet often overlooked, role in the functioning of societies. According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this sector represents a staggering 21.4% of the GDP in Latin America and the Caribbean. Despite this significant contribution, many caregivers grapple with emotional strain, limited personal time, and diminished employment opportunities.

At TENA®, we believe that caring shouldn’t mean sacrificing one’s own quality of life. That’s why we strive to provide solutions that support both individuals living with incontinence and their caregivers, promoting greater independence, mobility, and well-being for all.
Esteban Pérez, Brand Coordinator for TENA® Central America

Costa Rica’s population is aging rapidly, with over 12% of residents aged 65 and above, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC). This demographic shift underscores the vital need to acknowledge the contributions of caregivers and strengthen support networks.

TENA® offers specialized training for caregivers, products engineered for comfort and discretion, and support platforms designed to address incontinence with respect and normalization. These resources empower caregivers and those they care for to navigate the challenges of incontinence with greater confidence and dignity.

We need to have more conversations about care: who provides it, how it’s provided, and how we can collectively improve the caregiving experience. At Essity, we are actively participating in this conversation, supporting caregivers with empathy and tangible solutions that make this important work easier.
Alejandra Pulido, Director of Corporate Communications for Essity Central America

Every stage of life deserves attention and care. The resources and support offered by organizations like Essity and TENA® highlight the importance of recognizing the value of caregivers and providing them with the tools they need to thrive in their essential role. The conversation surrounding caregiving must continue, ensuring that those who dedicate themselves to the well-being of others receive the recognition, support, and resources they deserve.
