Route 27 Implements Full Sunday Reversibility to Ease January Traffic Surge

San José, Costa RicaSan José, Costa Rica – In a proactive move to manage the annual post-holiday traffic surge, officials have announced that Route 27 will operate with full lane reversibility every Sunday throughout January. The measure is designed to facilitate a smoother and faster return for thousands of vacationers traveling from the Pacific coast back to the Central Valley, addressing a predictable and often severe traffic bottleneck.

The National Concessions Council (CNC) confirmed the decision, citing the significant increase in road use associated with the national school vacation period. During January, a large number of families take advantage of the break to travel to popular destinations in Puntarenas and Guanacaste. This seasonal migration culminates in a massive, concentrated return to the San José metropolitan area on Sunday afternoons, frequently causing extensive delays and gridlock.

The first application of this traffic management strategy is scheduled for Sunday, January 4th, a critical date as it precedes the resumption of work for most public and private sector employees. The reversibility plan will continue on the subsequent Sundays of the month: January 11th, 18th, and 25th. This consistent scheduling aims to provide predictability for travelers planning their return trips from the coast.

Operationally, the lane reversal will be in effect from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on these dates. During this four-hour window, all available lanes on the approximately 47-kilometer stretch between Pozón and the Ciudad Colón toll plaza will be dedicated exclusively to traffic heading eastbound, towards the capital. This effectively doubles the capacity for vehicles returning to San José, significantly cutting down travel times.

To ensure motorist safety and prevent catastrophic head-on collisions, a comprehensive closure of westbound traffic will be enforced. All lanes traveling from San José towards the Pacific will be completely closed from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. This two-hour buffer, one hour before the reversal begins and one hour after it ends, allows road crews to safely set up and dismantle the necessary signage and barriers for the operation.

In addition to the physical lane changes, the General Directorate of Traffic Engineering has mandated a temporary speed limit to enhance safety during the reversal. A maximum speed of 60 kilometers per hour will be strictly enforced along the entire reversible section. Officials urge drivers to adhere to this limit, which will be clearly indicated by temporary road signs throughout the corridor.

The entire operation will be supervised by a significant deployment of Traffic Police officers. Their presence is intended to enforce the speed limit, guide drivers, and respond quickly to any incidents that may occur. For real-time road status updates or to request assistance, drivers can contact the Route 27 Concessionaire’s Control Center directly at the phone number 2588-4040.

This strategic intervention underscores the ongoing challenge Costa Rican authorities face in matching infrastructure capacity with peak demand, particularly on vital arteries like Route 27. By dynamically reallocating road space, the government aims to mitigate the economic and social costs of extreme traffic congestion, ensuring a safer and more efficient conclusion to the January holiday season for countless residents and tourists.
