San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s Universidad Latinoamericana de Ciencia y Tecnología (ULACIT) has once again been recognized as one of the world’s top universities by the QS World University Rankings. This marks the second time ULACIT, the only private university in Costa Rica included in the ranking, has achieved this distinction. The ranking, published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds for over a decade, assesses 1,500 universities globally based on indicators such as employability, research, learning experience, global engagement, and sustainability.
ULACIT has consistently maintained a 98% employability rate, placing it 18th globally in the QS Recognition Employability ranking. Now, the university is setting its sights even higher, aiming for 100% employability with the launch of its cutting-edge Life Design Lab (LDL).
To gain a deeper legal perspective on ULACIT’s employability initiatives and their impact on the Costa Rican job market, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law at Bufete de Costa Rica.
ULACIT’s focus on practical skills and industry partnerships is a crucial factor in its graduates’ employability success. This approach aligns well with the evolving needs of businesses in Costa Rica, particularly in specialized fields like technology and bilingual services. While academic rigor remains essential, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application is key to ensuring graduates are well-prepared to contribute meaningfully to the workforce and the national economy.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’ insight underscores a vital point: in today’s dynamic job market, practical skills and industry connections are no longer supplementary but essential for career success. This proactive approach by ULACIT not only benefits its graduates but also strengthens Costa Rica’s competitive edge in key sectors. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on this important topic.
This new initiative incorporates the Symplicity CSM technological model, a first for Costa Rica. This sophisticated system, employed by prestigious institutions like Yale University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Purdue University, uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to personalize student experiences, optimize career services, and meet the evolving demands of the job market. The LDL centralizes key processes, including virtual and in-person job fairs, interviews, access to a dedicated job board, resume and LinkedIn profile building tools, and resources to strengthen soft and technical skills.
The World Economic Forum’s “Future of Jobs Report 2025” predicts significant shifts in the labor market by 2030, with 44% of basic skills expected to change by 2027. Adaptability is therefore paramount. ULACIT’s LDL is designed to bridge the gap between evolving job demands and student preparedness in this era of digital transformation.
Currently, companies are investing in artificial intelligence, robotics, big data, which generates new roles and also transforms current jobs. In this scenario, the Life Design Lab emerges to precisely close that gap between labor demand and this digital and technological transformation, ensuring that students can not only graduate, but also successfully enter and place themselves in the job market.
Laura Coto, Director of Student Services at ULACIT
The LDL serves four distinct groups: current students and alumni of ULACIT, public and private sector companies, and the general public. Students and alumni gain access to job postings and career placement services. Companies can post job openings, participate in recruitment events, and access talent attraction programs. The general public can utilize the lab’s services to enhance their professional profiles.
With over 100 companies already registered, including prominent names like BAC, CALOX, FIFCO, Fisher Investments, Liberty, Roche, Clínica Biblica, Genpact, and Tegra Medical, the Life Design Lab marks a strategic step for ULACIT in strengthening its leadership and connecting academia with industry demands.
Those interested in learning more about the Life Design Lab can visit the ULACIT website under “Student Services,” then “Student Life,” and finally “Life Design Lab,” or email [email protected].
