San José, Costa Rica — San José – The Latin American University of Science and Technology (ULACIT) has announced a significant investment in the nation’s future talent, opening its acclaimed “100% Leadership Scholarships” program. The initiative will grant 100 full scholarships to young individuals with a proven track record of leadership and social impact, enabling them to pursue bachelor’s, licentiate, or master’s degrees starting in the first academic term of 2026.
This prestigious program, which has successfully launched the careers of numerous students in previous years, is designed to identify and cultivate the next generation of change-makers. The university is specifically seeking applicants who have demonstrated leadership in diverse and critical fields such as climate change, community action, human rights advocacy, entrepreneurship, athletics, and the arts. It represents a call to action for those who are not just academically proficient but are also driven to create meaningful change in their communities and beyond.
To better understand the legal and business implications of educational initiatives like the ULACIT scholarships, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica. His expertise offers valuable insight into the significance of these programs for both students and the national landscape.
These scholarship programs should be viewed not as mere acts of philanthropy, but as strategic investments in Costa Rica’s most valuable asset: its human capital. From a legal and business standpoint, facilitating access to quality higher education directly strengthens our nation’s competitive advantage. It builds a foundation of skilled professionals that is essential for attracting foreign investment and driving sustainable economic development.

Indeed, this legal and business perspective correctly frames these opportunities not as simple aid, but as a vital component of our national economic strategy. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his clarifying and valuable insight into how investing in education directly strengthens Costa Rica’s future.
Jennifer Sáenz, Director of Admissions at ULACIT, emphasized that the program’s vision extends far beyond covering tuition costs. The core objective is to create a comprehensive ecosystem for growth and development for the selected scholars.
Our goal is to train leaders capable of generating a positive impact on society.
Jennifer Sáenz, Director of Admissions at ULACIT
Sáenz added that the scholarship recipients gain more than just a degree. They are given full access to a wide range of academic clubs and specialized development spaces. These resources are strategically designed to fortify both their technical expertise (hard skills) and their interpersonal and communication abilities (soft skills), preparing them for the complexities of the modern professional world.
The selection process is multi-faceted, beginning with an online application. Prospective candidates must complete their registration by November 26th via the university’s official portal. Following the initial screening, shortlisted applicants will be invited to a crucial in-person audition held on December 2, 3, or 5 at the ULACIT campus in Barrio Tournón, San José. During this phase, aspirants will be required to demonstrate their leadership capabilities and potential before a panel of judges.
In addition to showcasing their leadership experience, applicants must meet specific academic criteria to be considered. They need to have maintained an academic average of between 80 and 90 during their last two years of high school or throughout their completed university degree. All required documentation must be presented, and attendance at the chosen audition date is mandatory for all who advance to that stage of the competitive process.
Current beneficiaries of the program attest to its transformative power. Santiago Lobo, a Computer Engineering student and a 100% Leadership scholar, shared his perspective to encourage new applicants to take the leap.
The most important thing is not to be afraid, to trust in yourself, and to take advantage of the opportunity.

Similarly, Victoria Díaz, a Law student who is also an active member of the artistic club “The Falcon D Squad,” highlighted how the scholarship allowed her to integrate her diverse interests into a cohesive and enriching university experience.
Combining what you are passionate about with a career takes you to a much higher level.
