UNA’s Job Fair Offers Hope to Costa Rican Job Seekers

Heredia, Costa Rica — Heredia, Costa Rica – The National University (UNA) is set to host its third annual job fair, offering a beacon of hope in a national job market facing uncertainty. From August 20th to 22nd, over 2,300 job opportunities will be available across diverse sectors, ranging from technology and healthcare to tourism and finance.

This year’s UNA Job Fair will adopt a hybrid approach, combining both in-person and virtual formats. Attendees can visit booths and network directly with company representatives at the Omar Dengo campus in Heredia from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day. The virtual fair will then take over from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. via the dedicated platform www.unaferiadeempleo.com, expanding the reach and accessibility of this vital event.

To gain a deeper legal perspective on the complexities surrounding job fairs and employment law, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Job fairs like the one organized by the UNA offer a valuable platform for connecting employers and potential employees. However, it’s crucial for both parties to understand the legal framework surrounding recruitment and hiring in Costa Rica. Employers should ensure their hiring practices comply with labor laws regarding non-discrimination, contracts, and working conditions. Attendees should be prepared to ask pertinent questions about these matters, protecting their rights and ensuring a successful transition into the workforce.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s emphasis on the legal aspects of recruitment is crucial. Navigating the complexities of labor law can be challenging, and his advice empowers both job seekers and employers to approach the hiring process with clarity and confidence, fostering a more equitable and transparent job market. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering this valuable perspective.

Beyond simply connecting job seekers with potential employers, the fair will also feature valuable workshops and training sessions. These sessions will cover essential topics like resume writing, interview skills, and emotional intelligence, equipping participants with the tools they need to succeed in their job search.

The fair is open to all, regardless of professional background. Positions are available for both experienced professionals and those entering the workforce, highlighting UNA’s commitment to serving the entire community.

With 44 companies participating, the UNA Job Fair reflects a broad spectrum of the Costa Rican economy. This diversity ensures opportunities for individuals with varying skills and interests.

Hugo Fonseca, coordinator of the fair and academic at the School of International Relations, emphasized the university’s role in bridging the gap between employers and job seekers.

From academia, we continuously observe the phenomena that affect the labor market, and this is a valuable opportunity to contribute to the national community. We’re generating a link that directly impacts the employability of Costa Ricans seeking work, whether they lack it or are looking for new horizons.
Hugo Fonseca, Coordinator of the UNA Job Fair and Academic at the School of International Relations

The timing of this event is particularly crucial given the recent departure of several multinational tech companies from Costa Rica. The INEC reported a national unemployment rate of 7.4% in the December 2024-February 2025 period, representing approximately 177,000 unemployed individuals. The UNA Job Fair aims to alleviate this situation and provide much-needed support to the community.

The success of previous UNA Job Fairs, organized in collaboration with the Schools of International Relations, Administration, Professional Secretariat, and Chemistry (Bioprocesses program), underscores the significant demand for such initiatives.
