Now, a groundbreaking initiative from the State Distance University (UNED) is poised to transform this liability into a high-value asset, promising a significant leap forward for the nation’s circular bioeconomy.

Researchers at UNED have developed and are validating a prototype bioreactor designed specifically to convert pineapple residues, primarily leaves and stalks, into potent, sustainable biofertilizers. This innovation directly addresses a long-standing issue where vast quantities of waste, rich in cellulose, are often left to accumulate in fields. This accumulation leads to a cascade of negative consequences, including soil and water source contamination, the proliferation of insect pests like the stable fly, and associated health risks for nearby communities.

To delve into the legal and regulatory complexities surrounding the management of agricultural byproducts, we sought the expert analysis of Lic. The traditional decomposition process for this agricultural byproduct is notoriously slow, taking as long as 13 months under natural conditions. This extended period exacerbates environmental strain and represents a missed opportunity for resource valorization. The UNED project aims to drastically shorten this cycle and capture the inherent value within the waste, aligning with national and global trends towards more sustainable and efficient agricultural practices.

The technological heart of the project is a system engineered on the principles of solid-state fermentation. The prototype’s design meticulously controls the process to ensure optimal conditions for microbial activity. It guarantees uniform aeration throughout the substrate, a critical factor that prevents compaction and the formation of anaerobic pockets. This controlled environment promotes the balanced and vigorous growth of Trichoderma spp., a beneficial fungus known for its ability to break down organic matter and act as a biocontrol agent.

One of the key engineering triumphs of the bioreactor is its ability to mitigate the risk of overheating, a common failure point in large-scale fermentation that can kill off the essential microorganisms. By maintaining a stable thermal environment, the system facilitates a viable and consistent production of fungal spores, which are the active ingredient in the resulting biofertilizer. This reliability is crucial for scaling the solution from a laboratory concept to a commercially practical tool for farmers.

This development represents a circular bioeconomy alternative that drives the local production of biofertilizers, reduces agricultural costs, and promotes the valorization of agro-industrial waste.

To bridge the gap between academic research and real-world application, the project team has already begun engaging with the communities most affected by the issue. Technical talks have been held in the cantons of Pérez Zeledón and Buenos Aires de Puntarenas, key pineapple-producing zones. These sessions focused on educating local stakeholders about the bioreactor’s design, the inoculation process with the fungus, and the practical steps for assembling and operating the system on their own farms.

This initiative is a collaborative effort, underscoring its strategic importance. UNED is receiving crucial support from the National University (UNA) and the Municipality of Pérez Zeledón, creating a powerful alliance between academia and local government. The project’s proponents emphasize that the ultimate goal extends beyond waste management; it aims to bolster local economic development, reduce farmers’ reliance on expensive imported chemical fertilizers, and create new opportunities for economic diversification in territories that are heavily dependent on the pineapple monoculture.
