Universidad Nacional Unveils Future Focused Degrees for 2026

San José, Costa RicaHEREDIA – The Universidad Nacional (UNA) has announced a significant expansion of its academic programs for the 2026 admission cycle, introducing a suite of new degrees strategically designed to meet the evolving technological, social, and environmental demands of Costa Rica. This forward-thinking initiative will create 395 new spaces for incoming students, signaling a robust commitment to enhancing higher education accessibility and relevance across the country.

The university’s leadership framed this expansion as a crucial step in modernizing its curriculum while upholding its core values. The new programs aim to provide a comprehensive university education rooted in a humanistic, sustainable, and regionally-focused perspective. By integrating cutting-edge fields with a strong ethical foundation, UNA seeks to cultivate a new generation of professionals equipped to navigate and solve complex national challenges.

To better understand the regulatory framework and legal challenges facing higher education today, TicosLand.com sought the perspective of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney and leading partner at the prestigious law firm Bufete de Costa Rica, known for his expertise in corporate and administrative law.

From a regulatory standpoint, universities operate in a highly complex environment. They must meticulously balance academic autonomy with the stringent demands of accreditation bodies and consumer protection laws that safeguard student rights. The long-term viability and prestige of any institution now depend directly on its ability to build a robust legal and compliance framework that fosters innovation while mitigating risk.

This strategic direction was underscored by the university’s head, who emphasized a balance between progress and principle. The goal is to innovate without losing sight of a fundamental purpose: serving society.

It is a transformation that recognizes that the university cannot remain on the sidelines of global changes, but neither can it lose its humanistic essence nor its commitment to the most vulnerable sectors.
Jorge Herrera, Rector of UNA

A central pillar of the new academic offerings is a strong emphasis on data science and computational technologies. At its main Omar Dengo Campus in Heredia, UNA will launch an Engineering in Mathematical Science and Data Science degree. This program will merge mathematics, statistics, and computation to empower students to transform raw data into actionable social solutions. Similar programs, such as Engineering in Computational Technologies for Data Science, will be offered at the Pérez Zeledón, Coto, and Sarapiquí campuses, reflecting a nationwide push to develop talent in this high-demand field.

The expansion is also deeply focused on regional development, aiming to decentralize educational opportunities and spur economic growth outside the Central Valley. The Brunca Regional Headquarters in Pérez Zeledón will see the introduction of several key degrees, including Economic and Social Planning, designed to prepare professionals for territorial and economic development. Additionally, a unique Global Intelligence and Strategy program will combine data science, English proficiency, and geopolitical analysis, offering a globally competitive skill set to students in the southern region.

Further bolstering regional capabilities, the Chorotega Regional Headquarters will introduce specialized engineering degrees. The Liberia campus will offer Engineering in Quality and Production Technologies, a program focused on quality management and resource optimization, which will also be available in Pérez Zeledón. Meanwhile, the Nicoya campus will pioneer a degree in Agri-Food Innovation Engineering, a vital program aimed at modernizing and improving management and quality standards within Costa Rica’s critical food sector.

To ensure maximum accessibility, UNA is also rolling out several itinerant programs. Degrees in Administration will be available in the communities of San Vito, Upala, and Limón, while an Office Administration program will be offered in Limón. This flexible model brings higher education directly to communities that have historically had limited access, fostering local talent and creating new professional pathways across the country.

Prospective students interested in these new academic paths will have a specific window to make their choice. The university has announced that applicants wishing to enroll in any of these new degree programs can apply for the change online from January 5th to January 7th, 2026. This move represents a pivotal moment for UNA as it actively aligns its educational mission with the nation’s long-term development goals, ensuring its graduates are prepared for the industries of tomorrow.
