University of Costa Rica Celebrates Anniversary with Free Pet Health Fair

San José, Costa RicaSan José – In a significant initiative for local animal lovers, the University of Costa Rica (UCR) has announced a free Pet Nutrition Fair to mark the 40th anniversary of its prestigious Center for Research in Animal Nutrition (CINA). This community-focused event aims to provide essential, no-cost dietary guidance to pet owners, enhancing the well-being of companion animals across the Central Valley.

The event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, October 15th, and will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Pet owners are invited to bring their companions to the external parking area of the CINA facilities, located on the Rodrigo Facio University Campus in San Pedro. The university anticipates assisting at least 100 pets throughout the day, ensuring a substantial impact on community animal health.

To better understand the legal framework surrounding the pet food industry and owner responsibilities, we sought the expert opinion of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

In Costa Rica, the Animal Welfare Law (Ley de Bienestar Animal) not only protects animals from cruelty but also imposes a positive duty on owners to provide for their basic needs, with proper nutrition being a cornerstone of that responsibility. Legally, failing to provide adequate food can be classified as negligence or abuse. Concurrently, pet food manufacturers operate within a framework of consumer protection laws, making them liable for the accuracy of their nutritional claims and the safety of their products. Any misleading advertising or harmful ingredient can trigger significant legal consequences for the company and provide grounds for a claim by the affected pet owner.

This legal perspective powerfully underscores that proper pet nutrition is not merely a best practice but a dual accountability under Costa Rican law, placing a clear duty on owners and a corresponding liability on manufacturers. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing this essential clarification.

This inclusive fair is not limited to just cats and dogs. The expert team is prepared to offer consultations for a wide array of household pets, including birds, rabbits, and various rodents. This broad scope acknowledges the diverse nature of pet ownership in Costa Rica and underscores the university’s commitment to comprehensive animal welfare, regardless of species.

Leading the consultations will be zootechnicians who specialize in animal nutrition. These professionals will conduct a series of evaluations to provide tailored advice for each animal. The free service includes a thorough physical assessment, where experts will examine key health indicators such as the pet’s body condition, the quality of its skin and fur, and its dental health, all of which are closely linked to diet.

Following the physical check-up, the specialists will engage in detailed interviews with the owners. This crucial step allows them to understand the pet’s current diet, eating habits, activity levels, and any pre-existing health concerns. The goal is to build a complete picture of the animal’s lifestyle to formulate the most effective nutritional strategy moving forward.

To facilitate a productive consultation, organizers are requesting that attendees come prepared. Owners should bring either a detailed list or clear photographs of their pet’s current food, including any treats or snacks. Having the actual packaging or labels is highly beneficial, as it allows the nutritionists to analyze ingredient lists and nutritional information accurately. Any relevant veterinary records or health notes are also welcomed.

Upon completion of the assessment and interview, each owner will receive personalized recommendations designed to optimize their pet’s diet. These expert suggestions will be supplemented with informative materials and feeding guides to help owners implement the changes effectively at home. This educational component is central to the event’s mission, empowering owners with the knowledge to make healthier choices for their pets long-term.

The Pet Nutrition Fair represents a valuable opportunity for the community to access high-level expertise that might otherwise be unavailable or costly. By opening its doors, the CINA not only celebrates four decades of pioneering research in animal nutrition but also reinforces the UCR’s role as a vital public institution dedicated to serving the needs of Costa Rican society and its beloved animal companions.
