Vast Counterfeit Merchandise Ring Busted in Coordinated Raids

San José, Costa RicaSan José, Costa Rica – A significant blow was dealt to the nation’s black market for counterfeit goods this week as authorities seized nearly 24,000 fraudulent products in a massive, coordinated operation. The raids, which spanned 20 different commercial locations across the central hubs of Alajuela, Heredia, Cartago, and San José, represent one of the largest intellectual property enforcement actions in recent memory.

The operation, spearheaded by the Alajuela regional office of the Judicial Investigation Organism (OIJ), was executed on Tuesday with support from multiple OIJ delegations, various Municipal Police forces, and the Drug Control Police. The combined effort targeted a network of stores and commercial premises believed to be key distribution points for merchandise illegally imitating a single, globally recognized brand.

According to an official report released by the OIJ on Wednesday, the total haul amounted to a staggering 23,868 individual items. The primary target of the counterfeiters was footwear, with agents confiscating 20,472 pairs of shoes, the vast majority of which were sneakers. The sheer volume of imitation footwear underscores the lucrative nature of this specific market segment for illicit traders.

Beyond sneakers, the inventory of seized goods paints a picture of a comprehensive fraudulent enterprise. Authorities cataloged a wide array of apparel and accessories, including sandals, hats, cleats, tank tops, coats, shorts, t-shirts, socks, fanny packs, and sweaters. These items were allegedly being sold to unsuspecting consumers as genuine products, damaging the brand’s reputation and violating its intellectual property rights.

The extensive investigation was initiated following a series of formal complaints filed directly by the international brand whose products were being copied. The company alerted Costa Rican authorities to the widespread commercialization of items that mimicked its original designs, prompting the OIJ to launch the covert probe that culminated in this week’s decisive raids.

As part of the operation, authorities had identified and planned for the arrest of at least nine individuals. These suspects are believed to be involved in the core logistics, administration, and sales aspects of the counterfeit network. All are being investigated for the alleged violation of Costa Rica’s Law on Intellectual Property, a crime that carries significant legal and financial penalties.

The successful execution of these 20 simultaneous raids highlights a sophisticated level of inter-agency cooperation. By bringing together investigative, local, and specialized police units, authorities were able to dismantle a significant portion of the retail infrastructure supporting the sale of counterfeit goods in the country’s most populous regions.

With the evidence and suspects secured, the case has now been transferred to the Public Ministry, which will assume functional direction of the legal proceedings. The OIJ has indicated that the investigation remains active as prosecutors work to build a case against the detained individuals and potentially uncover further links in the supply chain. This bust serves as a strong warning to others involved in the trade of fraudulent merchandise, reaffirming the commitment of Costa Rican law enforcement to protect intellectual property.
