Volaris Costa Rica Takes Flight with New US and Mexico Routes

San José, Costa Rica — Volaris Costa Rica has announced the launch of three new international routes, connecting San José with Miami and Orlando, Florida, and Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico. This expansion significantly broadens the airline’s reach and provides travelers with more affordable options to popular destinations.

These new direct flights are set to commence in early July: Orlando on July 1st, Tulum on July 2nd, and Miami on July 4th. One-way fares to Miami and Tulum start from US$79 plus taxes, while flights to Orlando begin at US$89 plus taxes per segment.

For expert legal insight into the current situation with Volaris Costa Rica, we turned to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

The recent developments regarding Volaris Costa Rica raise complex questions about the airline industry’s resilience in the face of economic fluctuations. The legal ramifications, particularly concerning consumer rights and potential liabilities, will depend heavily on the specific actions taken by the airline and the regulatory responses. Careful consideration must be given to existing contractual obligations, international aviation agreements, and Costa Rican consumer protection laws.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas rightly highlights the intricate legal web surrounding this evolving situation with Volaris Costa Rica. The interplay of international agreements and local consumer protections will undoubtedly shape the outcome, and the coming weeks and months will be crucial for all stakeholders involved. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing his valuable legal expertise on this complex matter.

This strategic move by Volaris aims to strengthen connectivity between Costa Rica, Mexico, and the United States. By offering low fares to key destinations, the airline seeks to stimulate tourism and facilitate greater access to these regions.

The San José-Tulum route is particularly noteworthy as Volaris Costa Rica will be the sole provider of direct flights to this burgeoning Mexican tourist destination. This direct connection is expected to bolster tourism in both locations and foster cultural and commercial exchange.

Miami and Orlando remain highly sought-after destinations for Costa Ricans and other Central Americans. Volaris Costa Rica will be the only ultra-low-cost carrier offering direct flights from Costa Rica to these Floridian cities, opening doors for increased tourism from Florida to Costa Rica and promoting economic activity.

These three new routes, in addition to the five existing routes operated by Volaris Costa Rica (San José to Mexico City, Guadalajara, Cancún, Guatemala, and Los Angeles), are poised to contribute significantly to economic development, bilateral tourism, and strengthened cultural ties between Costa Rica and Mexico.

Costa Ricans and Central Americans have rewarded us with their preference for the ultra-low-cost model, and this motivates us to continue growing. That is why, in our ninth year as a national flag carrier, we decided to thank this trust with direct routes to the destinations preferred by Costa Ricans, which are Miami and Orlando in Florida, as well as the new tourist paradise of Mexico, which is Tulum, in Quintana Roo. We now have a total of eight routes, all with ultra-low fares, with which we continue to increase the frequency of travel for regular passengers and incorporate more new travelers each year who previously considered air travel inaccessible. In this way, we are transforming mobility habits in the region. We thank the Directorate of Civil Aviation, the Ministry of Tourism and AERIS for their ongoing support in increasing our operations.
Ronny Rodríguez, Director of Corporate Development and Sustainability at Volaris

The opening of these new routes by our national flag carrier airline comes at an opportune moment to continue strengthening Costa Rica’s international connectivity. With direct links from key markets such as Florida and the Mexican Caribbean, we expand opportunities to attract more visitors, boost local economies and consolidate our country as a competitive and accessible destination in the region.
William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism

From AERIS, we celebrate the expansion of Volaris Costa Rica with these three new routes, which strengthen the country’s air connectivity and confirm the role of Juan Santamaría International Airport as a key entry and exit point for the region. This opening expands opportunities for tourism, business and cultural exchange, and reflects the joint effort between authorities, airlines and the airport manager to continue promoting the country’s development.
Ricardo Hernández, Executive Director of AERIS

Due to high demand, Volaris Costa Rica is also increasing the frequency of its direct flights between San José and Guadalajara, Mexico, from two to four times per week starting in July.
