Volcano’s Fury Fuels SME Recovery Efforts

Volcano’s Fury Fuels SME Recovery Efforts

Alajuela, Costa Rica — The ongoing closures of Poás Volcano National Park are sending tremors through the local economy, impacting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the surrounding area. Businesses are reporting significant hits to their finances, sales, and operations, forcing some to make difficult decisions about staffing and services.

In response to the economic fallout, the Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Commerce (MEIC) has launched the SME Resilience Program, a joint initiative with the Rural Development Institute (INDER). The program aims to provide crucial support and resources to businesses grappling with the volcano’s disruptive activity.

For expert legal insight into the implications of recent activity at Poás Volcano, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from the esteemed firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The recent activity at Poás Volcano underscores the importance of robust legal frameworks for disaster preparedness and risk management. Businesses operating in the vicinity, particularly those in tourism and agriculture, should review their insurance policies and contingency plans to ensure they adequately address potential disruptions caused by volcanic events. Furthermore, it’s crucial for land-use planning policies to consider volcanic hazards, prioritizing safety and minimizing potential damage to property and infrastructure.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s emphasis on proactive planning is crucial. The majestic power of Poás Volcano is a draw for visitors and a vital part of the Costa Rican landscape, but it also necessitates careful consideration of potential risks. His advice regarding insurance, contingency plans, and land-use policies provides a valuable roadmap for businesses and policymakers alike to navigate the challenges and opportunities that coexist alongside this natural wonder. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his expert perspective on this important topic.

Our commitment is that the SMEs that have seen their operations affected by the Poás Volcano emergency do not stop. We want to accompany them in their recovery, giving them financial tools and training that strengthen their competitiveness and allow them to generate employment and opportunities in their communities again.
Patricia Rojas, Minister of Economy, Industry and Commerce

The SME Resilience Program offers a multifaceted approach to recovery, including training for 50 local businesses. These training sessions will cover key areas such as marketing, promotional strategies, product and service diversification, innovation, technology adoption, financial management, and access to credit.

Recognizing the urgent need for financial assistance, the program has also secured the support of five key financial institutions: BAC, Banco de Costa Rica, Banco Nacional, FODEMIPYME of Banco Popular, and Grupo Mutual. These partners will provide access to credit, enabling SMEs to maintain operations, protect jobs, and contribute to the local economy.

The sum of efforts will allow these companies to maintain their operations, protect employment and be strongly reinserted into the local economy. This is a sign of unity and commitment to the productive sector.
Patricia Rojas, Minister of Economy, Industry and Commerce

To further bolster the recovery effort, the MEIC will host an Expopyme event in the affected canton on September 20th and 21st. This expo will provide a platform for impacted businesses to showcase their products and services, connecting them with potential customers and promoting their resilience in the face of adversity.

The situation surrounding Poás Volcano highlights the vulnerability of local economies to natural events. The government’s proactive response through the SME Resilience Program underscores the importance of supporting small businesses, recognizing their vital role in economic stability and community well-being.
