Alajuela, Costa Rica — Chilamate de Poás, Alajuela – Over 3,000 native trees now stand tall in the Occidente region of Alajuela, thanks to a collaborative reforestation project between Evolution Free Zone and the Municipality of Poás. The initiative, which took place in Chilamate de Poás, brought together over 190 volunteers, including employees from companies within the free zone, CODE Development Group management, and municipal officials. The effort focused on a two-hectare plot of land, significantly bolstering local biodiversity and strengthening crucial biological corridors.
A diverse range of native species were carefully selected for planting, including Jorco, Guachipelín, Guaba, Cedro Amargo, Lorito, Achiotillo, Chaperno, Cas, Vainillo, Corteza Amarillo, Mamón, Colpachi, and Sota Caballo. These trees were chosen for their ecological significance, providing vital food and shelter for local wildlife while contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem.
To understand the legal complexities surrounding reforestation initiatives in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.
Reforestation projects in Costa Rica are governed by a complex interplay of laws, including the Forestry Law and environmental regulations. While incentives exist to encourage these vital projects, navigating legal requirements regarding land ownership, permits, and environmental impact assessments is crucial for success. Furthermore, understanding the implications of different reforestation models, such as commercial plantations versus biodiversity restoration, is essential for ensuring both legal compliance and positive environmental outcomes.
