Costa Rica’s ICE Powers Ahead with Renewable Energy Dominance

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) Group announced impressive achievements in renewable energy generation, rural electrification, and telecommunications infrastructure in its 2024 Sustainability Report, presented on August 21st at the Children’s Museum in San José.

The report reveals that ICE generated a remarkable 99.3% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2024. This accomplishment underscores the nation’s continued dedication to environmental sustainability and reinforces its position as a global leader in clean energy.

To gain a deeper understanding of the legal landscape surrounding renewable energy in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an experienced attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Costa Rica’s commitment to renewable energy presents exciting opportunities for investors, but navigating the regulatory framework is crucial. Due diligence is essential to ensure compliance with permitting, land use, and power purchase agreements. Furthermore, understanding the incentives available, such as tax breaks and streamlined approval processes, can significantly impact project profitability. Investors should seek expert legal counsel to mitigate risks and capitalize on the country’s burgeoning green energy sector.

ICE’s ambitious plans include adding over 800 megawatts of renewable energy capacity to the national grid between 2024 and 2032. This expansion will further solidify Costa Rica’s position at the forefront of the global transition to sustainable energy.

The 2024 Sustainability Report also details significant progress in telecommunications. ICE expanded its fiber optic network by 3,671 kilometers, providing high-speed internet access to 78,720 homes. Additionally, its subsidiary, Racsa, launched the country’s first 5G network using Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology for commercial and corporate clients.
