Young Costa Rican Innovators Win Ultimate Formula 1 Experience

Young Costa Rican Innovators Win Ultimate Formula 1 Experience

San José, Costa RicaSAN JOSÉ – Top student teams from across Costa Rica are set to trade their classrooms for the racetrack this week, embarking on an all-inclusive VIP trip to witness the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Mexico. This once-in-a-lifetime prize comes after their victory in the national finals of STEM Racing, a prestigious international competition designed to ignite passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The competition, which is promoted globally by Formula 1 and active in over 65 countries, challenges young minds to apply classroom theories to real-world engineering problems. Student teams, composed of three to six members, are tasked with the entire lifecycle of a project: designing, building, and ultimately racing miniature cars propelled by CO₂ capsules. This hands-on experience provides an invaluable platform for developing critical thinking, teamwork, and technical skills.

This year’s Costa Rican chapter saw participation from an impressive 200 educational institutions, including a diverse mix of technical, scientific, and private high schools. The initiative is a collaborative effort, made possible through the crucial backing of corporate sponsors alongside strategic support from the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) and Costa Rica’s Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (PROCOMER). This public-private partnership underscores a national commitment to fostering next-generation talent.

The journey to the top was a rigorous one. The national competition featured a series of regional qualifiers that whittled the extensive field down to the 40 best teams in the country. These finalists faced a grand finale where their creations were scrutinized by a panel of industry experts from leading multinational corporations such as Boston Scientific, Microsoft, and Shockwave. The involvement of these tech giants highlights the direct link between the skills honed in the competition and the competencies sought by today’s leading employers.

Our purpose is for young Costa Ricans to discover their potential in STEM fields, because that’s where the real opportunities of the present and future lie. We are seeing enthusiastic, capable students developing the skills that the country needs to move forward.
Marco Cercone, Project Leader for STEM Racing in Costa Rica

The ultimate reward for the three winning teams is an unparalleled immersion into the world of elite motorsports. Starting tomorrow, the students will travel to Mexico for a comprehensive VIP experience at the Grand Prix. This exclusive package grants them privileged access to the inner workings of the event, including opportunities to interact with the race teams and pilots, providing an inspiring glimpse into the pinnacle of automotive engineering and competition.

The victorious teams celebrated for their outstanding performance across different categories include Meraki in the Professional category, Orion Oronati in the Entry category, and Macaw in the Dev category. Additionally, the team of Danae Esparza Bolaños, Juan Jose Vargas Nájera, Natalia Arce Mata, Samantha Badilla Quiros, and Julian Schäfer Granados secured the top spot in the Enty 3D category, showcasing a wide range of talent and innovation.

Beyond the thrill of the race and the allure of the prize, the STEM Racing program serves a vital strategic purpose for Costa Rica. It functions as a critical incubator for talent, directly addressing the growing demand for skilled professionals in the country’s burgeoning high-tech and life sciences sectors. By making STEM learning engaging and competitive, the initiative is actively building a pipeline of future engineers, designers, and innovators poised to drive the nation’s economic progress.
