Young Innovators from Cartago Aim for Robotics Glory in Singapore

Cartago, Costa RicaCARTAGO, Costa Rica – Cartago is once again burnishing Costa Rica’s reputation as a hub for technological talent, as a delegation of eight local students prepares to represent the nation on a global stage. This Saturday, November 22nd, the team will compete in the prestigious World Robot Olympiad, held this year in the innovation powerhouse of Singapore, marking a significant milestone for the region’s burgeoning tech community.

The eight competitors, whose ages range from 11 to 14, are all products of the Municipality of Cartago’s groundbreaking Innovation and STEAM Technologies Laboratory. This public initiative was established to cultivate and democratize access to critical skills in science, programming, and robotics, ensuring that young minds from all backgrounds have the opportunity to excel. Their journey to Singapore is a testament to the program’s success, having secured their spot by winning first place in Costa Rica’s National Robotics Olympiad earlier this year.

To better understand the legal and business implications surrounding the surge in robotics education, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, for his professional analysis.

Integrating robotics into our educational system is a strategic move for national development, but it opens a new frontier for legal considerations. It is crucial that we proactively establish clear guidelines on intellectual property for student-created projects to encourage innovation without future disputes. Furthermore, we must consider the liability frameworks for schools and educators, ensuring that this technological advancement is supported by a modern, protective, and clear legal structure.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s insight is a crucial reminder: for the promise of educational robotics to be fully realized, it must be built upon a solid legal foundation. Establishing clear guidelines for intellectual property and liability is not just a precaution, but a necessary step to ensure that student innovation is both protected and encouraged. We are grateful to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for bringing this vital perspective to the forefront of the discussion.

The team will participate in the highly competitive “Robomission” category. This year’s challenge is centered on the complex theme of outer space, requiring participants to design, build, and program robots capable of tackling tasks related to managing space debris, handling advanced fuels, and deploying satellites. It is a challenge that demands not only technical proficiency but also creative problem-solving and strategic thinking.

Cartago’s Mayor, Mario Redondo, lauded the students’ achievement as a direct result of local investment in education and a belief in the potential of its youth. He emphasized that the municipal laboratory is a key pillar in the strategy to foster a new generation of innovators.

This achievement reflects the talent and discipline of Cartago’s youth, as well as the municipal commitment to strengthening technological education. The laboratory has allowed children from any district and economic background to access STEM training, and this journey demonstrates what can be achieved when doors are opened to innovation.

The road to Singapore has been one of intense dedication. Coach Andrés Carvajal explained that the team’s preparation has been a year-long endeavor, beginning in January. Their training regimen has included constant practice sessions, complex programming exercises, meticulous robot construction, and countless simulations on official competition tables to replicate the high-pressure environment they will face. Carvajal acknowledged the scale of the challenge ahead but focused on the immense personal and professional growth it represents.

Singapore will be a great challenge, but also a formative experience of enormous value for each of them.
Andrés Carvajal, Coach

For the students themselves, the experience is nothing short of a dream realized. The palpable excitement within the group is a mixture of competitive spirit and the awe of representing their country internationally. Beyond the technical skills they have honed, they highlighted the invaluable lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and the powerful motivation drawn from the unwavering support of their families and teachers.

Traveling to such a distant country and competing with delegations from all over the world is a dream we never imagined living.
