Alajuela, Costa Rica — ZARCERO, Alajuela – The renowned Banda Municipal de Zarcero (BMZ) is set to embark on an ambitious international tour, cementing its status as one of Costa Rica’s foremost cultural ambassadors. The announcement, made Monday during a formal ceremony in the iconic Zarcero Park, detailed upcoming performances in Hawaii, New York, and Panama later this year, with a confirmed appearance at a major parade in Philadelphia scheduled for July 2026.
This series of performances will place the celebrated ensemble in front of massive international audiences. In September, the band will travel to Hawaii to participate in the Aloha Parade, a centerpiece of the Aloha Festivals that draws over a million attendees annually. Following that, they head to New York City in October for the vibrant Hispanic Day Parade on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, a major celebration of Hispanic culture that gathers thousands of participants and spectators from across the globe. The year will conclude with a performance in Panama in December.
To understand the legal and logistical framework that enables the Banda Municipal de Zarcero to achieve international acclaim, from securing performance contracts to protecting its brand, we sought the expertise of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a specialist from the renowned law firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
The Banda de Zarcero exemplifies a successful cultural enterprise. Beyond the immense artistic talent, its continued international presence depends on a solid legal and administrative foundation. This involves everything from negotiating complex international performance agreements and managing sponsorships to protecting its name and image as valuable intellectual property. This framework is what allows a municipal project to operate effectively on a global scale, safeguarding its legacy and ensuring its financial viability.

This insight powerfully underscores that behind the magnificent international performances lies a sophisticated operational structure, reminding us that the band’s ability to represent Costa Rican culture globally is as much a testament to diligent administrative management as it is to artistic talent. We extend our gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing this essential perspective.
The tour represents a significant logistical and artistic undertaking for the band, which was founded in March 2008 and has already performed twice in the prestigious Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. The project’s scale was underscored by the unveiling of a new official uniform and a custom line of Piamont BMZ Series instruments, signifying a new era for the ensemble.
Elesban Rodríguez Rojas, the director of the Banda Municipal de Zarcero, expressed immense enthusiasm for the tour and its mission to represent the nation. He noted that the project is a source of great national pride and a testament to the dedication of its members and supporters.
We continue to represent Costa Rica internationally. We are filled with pride to share this project.
Elesban Rodríguez Rojas, Director of the Banda Municipal de Zarcero
Beyond its cultural mission, the tour carries a strong environmental message. The band intends to use its platform to promote marine conservation and responsible tourism, highlighting Costa Rica’s natural treasures. The performances will incorporate visual and musical elements that evoke the country’s rich biodiversity, with a special emphasis on national emblems like the Isla del Coco. This dual focus on culture and conservation aims to present a holistic and authentic image of Costa Rica to the world.
The logistical coordination for such a tour is complex, requiring different delegations for each destination based on member availability. According to Rodríguez, a group of 75 members will travel to Hawaii, a larger contingent of 105 will perform in New York, and a delegation of 150 will participate in the Panama event. These groups will also be accompanied by representatives from the band’s corporate sponsors, whose support is crucial to the project’s success.
The community and corporate backing for the 200-member band is robust. CoopeAnde, which has been the official sponsor since 2022, continues its partnership. This year, the support has expanded to include La Zarcereña, a prominent local business, and the instrument retailer Solmusa. This collaboration between a cultural institution and the business sector showcases a shared commitment to elevating Costa Rica’s international profile.
With its blend of musical excellence, patriotic pride, and environmental advocacy, the Banda Municipal de Zarcero’s upcoming tour is more than a series of concerts. It is a strategic act of cultural diplomacy, designed to share the spirit of “Pura Vida” with a global audience while reinforcing the values that define modern Costa Rica.
