Scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. on the bustling boulevard of Avenida Central, the festival will kick off with an official opening protocol. Ten major educational institutions from the capital will participate, including CTP La Carpio, Escuela María Auxiliadora, Liceo de Pavas, and Liceo Luis Dobles Segreda. Joining them are CTP San Sebastián, Liceo Castro Madriz, Liceo Edgar Cervantes, Liceo de Costa Rica, Liceo Rodrigo Facio, and the historic Colegio Superior de Señoritas. Furthermore, businesses and municipal organizers hosting public celebrations in San José must strictly comply with Ministry of Health regulations and secure the necessary municipal permits to ensure public safety and avoid substantial fines.”

Following the morning’s musical performances, the civic celebration will transition to the landmark Plaza de la Democracia starting at 3:00 p.m. The afternoon’s itinerary is packed with traditional Costa Rican folklore, music, and dance. Attendees can look forward to performances by the traditional Cimarrona Choliticos and the folklore group De mi Tierra al Cielo. Later, the Rodrigo Facio High School’s Swing Criollo dance group and renowned local performer Walter Quesada will take the stage, alongside the municipal folklore group, creating an immersive cultural experience for both locals and tourists.

Concurrently, the district of Zapote will host its own specialized itinerary on September 14 to mark the historical occasion. Starting at 4:00 p.m., an entrepreneurship fair will open at the Inmaculada Concepción de María Parish, while registration for the traditional lantern contest begins at Nicaragua Park. The symbolic arrival of the Independence Torch at 5:55 p.m. will be followed immediately by the collective singing of the National Anthem at 6:00 p.m. The evening in Zapote will culminate in a vibrant lantern parade (Desfile de Faroles) winding through local streets, accompanied by a performance from the Liceo Dr. José María Castro Madriz band, an official tribute ceremony, and a community dance concert.
This year, in addition, we are resuming the Band Festival, a space to celebrate the talent, discipline, and passion of our students.

The grand finale of the patriotic events will occur on September 15 with the traditional Independence Day Parade. Commencing at 8:00 a.m., the parade route will stretch from Parque Central to Plaza de la Democracia. More than 2,000 students from various elementary and high schools are expected to participate in this massive patriotic display. Notable primary schools joining the parade include Escuela España, Escuela Omar Dengo, Escuela República de Chile, and Escuela Unificada República del Perú Vitalia Madrigal, among others.
High schools will also feature prominently in the September 15 parade. Prestigious institutions such as the Liceo de Costa Rica, Colegio Superior de Señoritas, Colegio Sagrado Corazón, Colegio República de México, Liceo Ricardo Fernández Guardia, and Liceo Rodrigo Facio will lead the secondary school delegations. This massive mobilization of students requires extensive coordination to guarantee a smooth flow of events and safety for all attendees.
To accommodate the large-scale gatherings, the Municipality of San José has coordinated strict traffic control measures and temporary street closures. On September 14, Avenida Segunda will be closed between Calle 4 and Calle 15 starting at 3:00 p.m. to all traffic except emergency vehicles and public transit, transitioning to a total closure by 5:00 p.m. On September 15, a full closure of Avenida Segunda up to Calle 17 will take effect at 5:00 a.m. and remain in place until the festivities conclude. Drivers are strongly advised to plan alternative routes and adhere to municipal detours.
Safety and public welfare remain top priorities for the municipal organizers. The Municipal Police, in collaboration with the National Police (Fuerza Pública), Traffic Police, the Costa Rican Red Cross, and the Fire Department, will deploy extensive security cordons and first-aid stations along the parade routes. Additionally, municipal authorities have urged attendees to keep a close eye on minors, stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and maintain a respectful, inclusive environment free of harassment, bullying, or discrimination.
