Established in 2015, the El Fauno Fund has served as a cornerstone for Costa Rica’s domestic creative economy. The eleventh call for proposals specifically targeted the development and production phases of audiovisual works and video games. The selected projects reflect a broad spectrum of artistic endeavors, ranging from documentary features and dramatic cinema to immersive technology and experimental game design. By diversifying the funding across these distinct categories, the MCJ aims to cultivate a resilient creative ecosystem capable of adapting to global entertainment trends.
Among the 16 selected projects, several high-budget productions secured substantial financial backing. Notable feature-length or complex projects include “Sin Roots” by JGG Log Studio S.R.L., which received the highest single grant of ₡60,000,000. Other major recipients include “La hija de la muerte” by La Abadía Producciones S.A., “Jungle House” (3-102-779483 S.R.L.), and “Quemada” by Tres Tigres Films SRL, each securing ₡50,000,000. Additionally, “Valle Oscuro” by Centrosur Producciones G.F.V S.A. was awarded ₡48,001,520, positioning these works as the flagship endeavors of this funding cycle.
In addition to the flagship projects, the El Fauno Fund allocated targeted grants of ₡14.9 million and ₡6 million to smaller-scale or development-phase initiatives. “Agua Dulce” by A&D Agencia Digital SRL received ₡14,998,480, while a wide array of creative endeavors—including “El sol de oro” by Hyper and Allergic Films SRL, “Los rizomas” by La Línea VPRO S.A., “Hay raíces bajo todas las tumbas”, “El salón de los espejos”, “Mapache”, “Cadejos”, and “Colina Fértil”—each secured ₡6,000,000. This tiered funding structure ensures that both emerging creators and established production houses can find the necessary resources to advance their creative visions.
From an economic perspective, these grants do more than just fund art; they stimulate job creation in highly skilled technical sectors. The production of films and video games requires a complex network of local professionals, including screenwriters, directors, actors, digital animators, sound engineers, and software developers. The ₡330 million investment is expected to generate significant indirect economic activity, benefiting hospitality, catering, and equipment rental industries throughout the country.
Beyond the economic numbers, the funded projects carry deep cultural significance and contribute to national identity. Works such as “Sin patrias” (awarded ₡5,000,000), “La pelota” (awarded ₡5,000,000), and “Los espíritus de Cahuita” (awarded ₡5,000,000) reflect a strong focus on regional storytelling and heritage preservation. By documenting local legends, historical narratives, and contemporary Costa Rican identities, the El Fauno Fund plays a vital role in preserving national memory and enriching the country’s cultural registry.
