Costa Rican Agricultural Exports Surge as Local Producers Target European Expansion in Madrid

San José, Costa Rica — MADRID — Costa Rica is making a significant play to cement its position as a premier agricultural exporter in Europe. Under the leadership of the Foreign Trade Corporation of Costa Rica (PROCOMER), a robust delegation of 68 domestic enterprises has descended on Madrid for the prestigious Fruit Attraction 2026 trade show. Held from October 6 to 8, the event serves as a massive global stage, drawing over 2,500 companies and upwards of 121,000 industry professionals from 150 nations, all looking to secure fresh supply chains and trade partnerships.

The aggressive push into the European market comes on the heels of impressive financial momentum. Between January and August of 2026, Costa Rican agricultural exports to Europe surged to $1.289 billion. This figure represents an impressive nine percent growth rate compared to the same eight-month period in 2025. This positive trajectory has been largely fueled by consistent international demand for traditional high-performing staples, including fresh pineapples, bananas, green coffee, cassava, and watermelon.

To better understand the complex regulatory environment and legal frameworks driving Costa Rica’s thriving agricultural export sector, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a prominent legal expert at the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The sustained growth of Costa Rica’s agricultural exports relies heavily on our rigorous compliance with international phytosanitary, environmental, and labor regulations. Navigating these evolving legal standards and leveraging free trade agreements effectively is what allows our exporters to secure and maintain a competitive edge in premium global markets.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Indeed, as global markets demand ever-higher standards of compliance, navigating these complex legal and environmental frameworks becomes a crucial strategic advantage for Costa Rican producers looking to secure a foothold abroad. We extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable expertise and highlighting the vital role that legal diligence plays in sustaining the growth of our nation’s agricultural exports.

To sustain this upward trajectory, PROCOMER’s delegation has been strategically divided into two operational cohorts. Thirty-two of the participating companies are showcasing their products directly within the country’s signature “esencial COSTA RICA” national pavilion. Meanwhile, the remaining 36 enterprises are participating in an active commercial prospecting mission designed to establish direct, face-to-face contacts with international wholesalers, importers, retail chain representatives, and buyers.

Notably, this delegation reflects a conscious effort toward regional and gender inclusivity. Thirty of the participating firms operate outside the country’s central Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM), and six are led by female entrepreneurs. This demographic shift highlights a broader national policy to distribute the wealth generated by international commerce beyond the industrial center of the country.

Current international trade demands diversifying buyers and destinations to maintain the competitiveness of Costa Rica’s agricultural sector. Furthermore, combining diversification with more advanced production, which incorporates technology and value-added offerings, allows us to sustain the sector’s growth, respond agilely to changes in demand, and expand the participation of regional companies in global chains. Fruit Attraction is part of that long-term vision because it expands access to buyers in Europe and opens up space for the impact of exports to reach more territories of the country.
Laura López, General Manager of PROCOMER

This participation in Madrid is not an isolated effort but rather a key component of a long-term commercial strategy. Since the second half of 2025, the country brand has been actively executing “The Natural Choice,” a highly targeted promotional campaign. This initiative utilizes modern digital channels, including Amazon’s Fire TV and Alexa interactive systems, to introduce Costa Rican bananas, pineapples, coffee, and cassava directly to millions of consumers in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain. By pairing high-tech consumer advertising with direct business-to-business networking in Madrid, Costa Rica is executing a dual-pronged approach to secure both household brand loyalty and corporate distributor contracts.

The diverse product range displayed at Fruit Attraction highlights the country’s unique biodiversity and agricultural versatility. Beyond world-renowned fresh pineapples, bananas, and papayas, the Costa Rican stands feature a variety of high-demand roots and tubers, such as yam, sweet potato, taro, malanga, and cassava. Furthermore, the delegation has brought value-added products like plantain chips, showcasing how local producers are successfully moving up the value chain to capture higher margins. Logistics and supply chain service providers have also joined the delegation, ensuring that international buyers are presented with complete, end-to-end purchasing solutions.

To maximize engagement at the trade fair, the “esencial COSTA RICA” stand has been designed to provide an immersive sensory experience. Visitors are treated to regular tasting sessions featuring gourmet culinary preparations made with authentic Costa Rican ingredients. Additionally, a dedicated national coffee bar serves as a lively networking hub, offering potential international clients a taste of the country’s world-famous export-grade coffee while facilitating quiet business negotiations in a professional setting.

As global trade conditions continue to evolve, Costa Rica’s proactive stance in Europe underlines its ambition to remain an agile, high-tech, and sustainable supplier. By bringing regional and female-led businesses into the international spotlight, the nation is ensuring that the economic windfalls of global trade are distributed more equitably across its rural provinces. The connections made in Madrid during this three-day summit are expected to yield long-term export agreements, securing the livelihood of thousands of local farmers back home.
