Travel and Tourism Defies AI Job Concerns with Projected Growth of Ninety Million Positions

Travel and Tourism Defies AI Job Concerns with Projected Growth of Ninety Million Positions

San José, Costa Rica — At a time when artificial intelligence (AI) and automation spark deep anxieties regarding global employment, the global travel and tourism industry is demonstrating a completely different trajectory. Business leaders gathering at the 26th Global Summit of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) in Malta have underscored that this sector remains an irreplaceable pillar of human-centric employment.

During her address at the summit, WTTC President and CEO Gloria Guevara noted that while technological shifts raise questions about job losses, travel and tourism continue to move in the opposite direction. Her comments arrived shortly after a striking warning from Jacob Coxon, a former AI researcher at OpenAI and Anthropic, who argued that AI could become an existential threat by 2030.

As Costa Rica’s tourism sector continues to experience unprecedented growth, navigating the complex legal landscape of hospitality investments and zoning regulations becomes paramount for developers. To understand the legal mechanisms driving this boom, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading legal expert from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The current surge in tourism offers immense potential, but long-term success hinges on rigorous legal compliance. Investors must carefully navigate maritime zone concessions, environmental regulations, and local municipal permits to ensure their projects are not only profitable but also legally secure and sustainable under Costa Rican law.

Indeed, as Costa Rica’s tourism sector experiences this dynamic growth, ensuring that development is anchored in strict legal and environmental compliance is essential for protecting both investor capital and our nation’s rich ecological heritage. We extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable expertise, which serves as a crucial guide for fostering sustainable and legally secure tourism in the region.

That is in just four years. Whether or not we agree with that prediction, one thing is undeniable: technology is advancing at an unprecedented speed.
Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of the WTTC

Despite these disruptive technological predictions, the travel and tourism industry continues to expand faster than the global economy. Guevara pointed out that the sector represents more than 10% of global GDP and supports one in every nine jobs worldwide. Over the past five years, a staggering one-third of all newly created jobs globally originated in travel and tourism.

Looking toward the future, the WTTC projects that the sector will generate between 89 million and 91 million jobs over the next decade. The core explanation for this expansion lies in the irreproducible human element of hospitality.

We are creating jobs and opportunities, and we are doing so in virtually every corner of the world because, in essence, travel and tourism have always been about serving people; everything revolves around people.
Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of the WTTC

Crucially, the WTTC is not advocating for a rejection of technology, but rather for its responsible integration. Currently, travelers continue to experience outdated border crossings, spending hours waiting in lines and presenting physical identification multiple times. Implementing digital identity, biometrics, and artificial intelligence can streamline the journey while bolstering global security.

To unlock this immense potential, the WTTC has established eight key priorities. These encompass facilitating safe and seamless travel, managing destination saturation, driving environmental sustainability, harnessing AI responsibly, preparing for crises, expanding connectivity, recruiting talent, and creating investment-friendly policies.

The host nation of the summit, Malta, is actively embodying this forward-thinking approach. Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela outlined his country’s transition from a seasonal sun-and-beach destination to a year-round travel hub. Through the Malta Vision 2050, the Mediterranean island is planning half a century ahead to ensure sustainable growth.

Our ambition is not to promote tourism for its own sake, but to promote tourism that generates lasting value. We are planning beyond the next national budget, beyond the current political mandate, and even beyond the next decade; we are looking ahead to the year 2050.
Robert Abela, Prime Minister of Malta

Ultimately, the WTTC summit demonstrates that while automation reshapes the global corporate landscape, the travel and tourism industry remains a vital harbor for human work. By merging high-tech biometric solutions with the high-touch reality of hospitality, global economies can build a resilient, future-proof workforce that thrives alongside artificial intelligence.
