This complementary agreement, which builds upon a foundational technical cooperation treaty in place since 1997, signals a renewed commitment from two of Latin America’s key agricultural players. The collaboration will focus on sharing specialized knowledge and driving joint actions to enhance the institutional and individual capacities of producers, ensuring the long-term health of the sector through the efficient use of natural resources.

Likewise, it will facilitate the exchange of experiences surrounding the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) model that Costa Rica has been promoting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen the climate resilience of the agricultural sector.

This exchange is particularly notable. Costa Rica, a global leader in environmental policy, will share its successful NAMA framework, providing Brazil with a proven model for decarbonizing its vast agricultural landscape. Beyond high-level technical exchanges, the pact includes concrete support for small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises (SMEs). It aims to foster an environment ripe for public-private partnerships and improve producer resilience through targeted technical assistance. Farmers will receive training in practices such as sustainable soil management, crop diversification, efficient water use, silvopastoral systems, and agroforestry, equipping them to thrive in the face of climate change.
Furthermore, the alliance will tackle pressing environmental challenges head-on. Both countries have committed to developing joint strategies for restoring degraded lands, a critical issue for long-term food security and biodiversity.
