Puntarenas, Costa Rica — The fast-food landscape in Costa Rica continues to grow as Arcos Dorados, the massive franchise operator of McDonald’s across Latin America and the Caribbean, has officially inaugurated its 81st restaurant in the country. Situated in El Roble, Puntarenas, this new establishment represents a major step forward for the brand’s national footprint. Beyond broadening its reach, the opening signifies a calculated investment in the socioeconomic fabric of the coastal province.
The new McDonald’s Puntarenas location has introduced 36 new formal employment opportunities for local residents, addressing critical economic needs in the region. Among these new positions, six have been established at the management level. Crucially, for 19 of the hired team members, this opportunity marks their very first formal job. This focus on youth and entry-level employment highlights the franchise’s ongoing strategy of fostering local talent and offering career development pathways in areas outside the central valley.
To better understand the regulatory framework and corporate implications of McDonald’s operations and expansion within the national market, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a prominent legal expert from the esteemed firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
Operating a major multinational franchise like McDonald’s in Costa Rica requires meticulous compliance with local labor laws, strict municipal sanitary permits, and robust trademark protections. While Costa Rican legislation offers a stable and welcoming environment for foreign direct investment, long-term corporate success hinges on seamlessly navigating our country’s complex administrative processes and evolving consumer protection regulations.

Indeed, as the golden arches continue to thrive across the country, it becomes increasingly clear that long-term operational success in Costa Rica lies not just in brand recognition, but in a deep, respectful adherence to our nation’s regulatory and legal frameworks. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing such a valuable and clear-eyed perspective on the complex administrative realities that shape the franchise industry here.
We are very excited about our arrival in Puntarenas. With this restaurant, we want to offer our customers an experience with a varied, delicious, and high-quality menu, while also generating new employment opportunities for our new neighbors.
Marianela Ureña, Communications Manager of Arcos Dorados Costa Rica
The site selection was highly strategic, aiming to capture both local consumer bases and passing travelers. Located in El Roble on the Costanera highway, southwest of Alimentos Prosalud, the restaurant is perfectly positioned to serve the expanding communities of El Roble, Barranca, and the central city of Puntarenas. Its placement on a high-traffic highway leading to various Pacific destinations makes it an attractive, convenient stop for domestic and international tourists traveling along the coast.
Designed to provide a comprehensive customer experience, the Puntarenas location integrates modern technological features and service channels. Customers can access the brand’s popular AutoMac drive-thru, opt for McDelivery services, or utilize self-service digital kiosks inside. With a seating capacity of 56 patrons, the restaurant also features a McCafé and an outdoor playground, ensuring it caters to families, commuters, and quick-service diners alike.
A cornerstone of this new branch is its alignment with Arcos Dorados’ Recipe for the Future (Receta del Futuro) social and environmental strategy. This location is the seventh McDonald’s restaurant in Costa Rica to be equipped with solar panels for clean energy generation. By harvesting solar energy, the facility significantly reduces its carbon footprint and reliance on the national grid, establishing a green benchmark for quick-service restaurants in the coastal zone.
Beyond solar energy, the building incorporates an array of advanced environmental systems. These include high-efficiency air conditioning units, an automated Energy Management System (EMS), a solar water heater, and motion-activated sensors to optimize electricity consumption. Water conservation is also a priority; the restaurant utilizes a condensation recovery system to collect water for irrigation and external cleaning, paired with low-consumption plumbing fixtures and drought-tolerant landscaping. It also features sorting stations for recyclable waste and a dedicated program for the responsible recycling of used cooking oil.
To celebrate its arrival, Arcos Dorados is implementing its Good Neighbor (Buen Vecino) community program in Puntarenas. The company will donate a Barriloteca (a barrel-themed mobile library) along with educational books from the El Chavo Animado campaign to the Ivonne Pérez Guevara Special Education Center in El Roble. Additionally, 15 students from this center will collaborate with local artist José Fernández to paint a mural inspired by the restaurant’s sustainable practices, particularly its solar panels, integrating art, education, and ecological awareness.
The grand opening festivities are scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026. Arcos Dorados has extended an open invitation to all residents of the Puntarenas province, promising a day filled with interactive family activities, entertainment, and promotional surprises to mark this milestone entry into the community.
