According to María Martínez, a researcher and geochemist at Ovsicori-UNA, indigenous populations inhabited the region between La Fortuna and the current Lake Arenal long before the volcano itself was born. This historical presence is well-documented by various archaeological discoveries in the area. Furthermore, the name of the colossus refers to the massive abundance of pyroclastic material, such as ash, lapilli, and pulverized rock, found scattered across its steep slopes and surrounding plains.

Prior to the cataclysmic event of 1968, Arenal was perceived merely as a conical mountain covered by dense, virgin forests. Its summit featured a single crater, known as Crater D, which exhibited only low-temperature fumarolic activity. The local population was largely unaware of the destructive potential sleeping beneath the lush green canopy.

However, precursor signs began to emerge between 1961 and 1967. Historical records compiled by geologist Guillermo Alvarado indicate that local residents and hunters noticed a steady increase in fumarolic activity, elevated water temperatures, and a distinct change in the taste of the Tabacón River. These warnings were accompanied by low-magnitude tremors, ground cracks, and instances of livestock dying from carbon dioxide exposure.

The turning point arrived on July 29, 1968, following a seismic swarm that had begun the previous day. A violent explosion generated blistering clouds of gas, ash, and hot ballistic rocks, which completely destroyed the villages of Tabacón and Pueblo Nuevo. The tragedy claimed approximately one hundred lives and obliterated entire ecosystems, remaining the deadliest volcanic event in Costa Rican history.

Eduardo Malavassi, a volcanologist and co-founder of Ovsicori-UNA, recalled how his father, geologist Enrique Malavassi, miraculously survived a pyroclastic cloud on July 31, 1968. The elder Malavassi was conducting field inspections near the Tabacón River alongside municipal authorities and a chemist from the University of Costa Rica when the hazard struck.

Following the 1968 catastrophe, Arenal entered an intense, continuous eruptive phase that lasted for 42 years. This period was characterized by a steady flow of lava, ash explosions, and the eventual formation of Crater C. These constructive and destructive processes altered the volcano’s geometry, with the new crater rising some 50 meters above the original summit.

This long-term magmatic activity began to decline gradually during the 2000s, coming to a complete halt in October 2010. Scientists at Ovsicori-UNA confirmed this dormancy by verifying the total absence of sulfur dioxide emissions. Today, the volcano exhibits only weak, diffuse emissions of water vapor and minor quantities of carbon dioxide.

The transition from a highly active state to a period of rest makes Arenal an exceptional platform for scientific inquiry. Ovsicori-UNA maintains constant surveillance over the structure, focusing on regional seismicity, slope stability, hot spring geochemistry, and ecosystem recovery.
